Wiper arm not moving

wiper arm on the drivers side seems to have given up the ghost... i can manually move it with my hand up/down as if it's totally loose, the nut on top is still tight.

is it easy enough to remove to get a look at what might have gone wrong, or is it likey some motor underneath? the passanger side is still fine

It's the wiper arm linkage bushing that failed. You can buy this clip to fix it. http://youtu.be/Rp9htcING2E. This happened to me last month. I managed to repair it with with out buying this repair kit but I think this is the best solution.
 
Common fault.
Get a clip as above or drill and tap the centre ball out and fit a bolt and washer to stop it popping off. There's a thread to remove the scuttle panel to get to the mechanism
 
aye found the thread with working pictures on bimmerforums last night, about to head out and try remove it to have a look but fairly sure this is what awaits me, ordered a new clip off ebay there now

fixed this now, hard to buy a heavy duty puller to get the arms off.

it was the link right at the drivers side arm point that had came off, noooooo idea how cause never mind using the clip...i'd to use a pair of grips to push the thing back together it was that tight.
back on fitted now thankfully
