Thought I'd capture this video whilst I was in the car for another wiper query.

First two wipes were done with a flick of the lever. The 2nd set were done by pushing the lever up 2 click, past the intermittent setting.
Haven't got a video of the car in motion with the wipers on, so can't say whether they'd act differently.

Yes, that's a general solution to a few wiper problems, such as when you switch the wipers off and they sit a couple of inches higher than normal and possibly do a little flick on return.
The pictures in the
bimmerforums link should walk you through the solution easily enough - if you feel comfortable doing a little easy DIY.
