Winter's coming - Half Cover Group Buy.

I would like to get one of these (Tarpaulin Covers) to offer some sort of protection (especially during the winter months), should also help minimise icy windscreens.

The BMW one is about £90:

However, there are other companies that make similar covers such as:
http://www.classicadditions.com/waterproof-half.html
http://www.everycarcovered.com/half-size-xs/272-half-cover-car-cover.html

These are almost half the price but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these or even with the OEM one? Would be good to get some feedback on all or any of them.

Once we have established which is the best one to go for, perhaps we could do a group buy if anyone else is interested?

Thanks,
Marco

The problem I feel with these half covers is that they could freeze on the car so when you're putting it on it has to be dry.

hmmm... have to agree on that one, I would prefer a full cover or only the small one for the windshield. I don't really see the point of this cover type, but then again: my car sleeps in a garage.

The only use I could see for me though: use it as a cover in my garage in summer time, instead of putting the roof always up, to better protect the roof motor... but then still a little expensive to my liking...

My car's kept in the garage, so not an issue. However, my 5 series sits outside, and I do use one of these 'half-covers' when needed in the winter. Just a cheap £20 one, but makes a big difference. Thin material, does not stick to the body, and stops from or ice from forming in the screen or windows. Recommended, but no need to spend £50.

As above, my Zed lives in the garage, but I could do with a cover for my daily to stop frost and ice forming on the windscreen. Do these freeze to the windows?

Hi and thanks for the feedback. I have heard the concern about the cover freezing to the car and I don't' know whether this is true or not - this would have to be carefully monitored. Even if that was the case, there are many non-icy days it could be used and to be honest, these covers are great for summer too as I believable the sun does more damage to the soft top than anything else. So at worst, you would probably be extending the life of the soft top.

What concerns me the most at the moment is stopping the water, twigs, leaves, bugs etc from falling into the gap between the soft top and the car, predominantly around the back and sides where the water drainage holes are - I ultimately think that stopping anything from getting in there (and you would be surprised what I find in there from parking outside) is only going to help things.

Hey DR-Z, where did you get this "cheap £20 one" from then?

actually - they're probably worth considering as the window could 'freeze' in place, and you wouldn't be able to get into the car (window drops by about 1" when opening door - if this freezes (and it did for me last year) then you can't get in till you have defrosted)

I thought this thread was going to be about cheap insurance for people who only drive their Zed half as much in the winter. :?

I've got a cheapo Halfords one but not used it yet. Heard some horror stories (on here, I think) about them rubbing grit/dirt against the paintwork when it's windy, so I'm going to fully check it out before fitting for the first time. Matey on my road has one for his 80s Carrera Cabriolet and, to be honest, I'm pretty annoyed at him for ruining my view of it.

I bought mine from EBay, but can't remember the seller as it was a couple of years ago. Anyway, try this one....

Bear in mind, this will not be a custom quality precise-fitting 'hood=glove', but will be perfectly serviceable and keep the frost, ice, snow and bits of crap off the roof and glass.

You get what you pay for some say water repellent not WATERPROOF. I have just bought a breathable full waterproof cover however it was quite expensive but worth it i think. :)
