Winter Wheels

Last November I purchased a set of winter wheels for the SL, which I will be selling later this year, I’d like to get a set of winter wheels for my G29 on order, as the SL was much better in cold conditions. I am however, finding it difficult to find a set of wheels that fit with front 225/40 R19 on 8 x 19 ET20 and 245/40 R19 on 9 x 19 ET28 unless I go with the full size equivalents.

Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this process?

I think they need to be 35 high for 19inch tires.

The dealership offers a set of 18" rims/wheels here:
18” Dubbelspaak 798M, Orbitgrey
front: 255/40R18 99V XL
rear: 255/40R18 99V XL

I ended up buying bigger wheels for the summer and ordered wintertires for my summer wheels, because the 18inch wheels lowerd my car so much i couldnt exit the garage anymore without scraping the bottom of the car

When I bought my 35is I negotiated a good discount from the BMW Winter wheels package - I got them for Mrs K‘s 335 - it’s a square set up as they recommend and comes all ready to fit and only tpms to re calibrate.

Thanks Raven, that's interesting that they offered 18" wheels as I was concerned that they may not fit over the M40i brakes and that they offered a square set up on 255's. I already have a full set of Conti allseasons in 255/35 R19 from the SL so could just get a new set of 9 x 19 ET32 alloys and sensors

If I was sticking with 255 fronts on 19" then the 35 profile would be correct, however changing to 225/R19 they would need to be 40's to keep a similar rolling diameter.

The 335 uses 18“ (winter) wheels with a higher profile v the Std 19“ Low Profile set up - however they are perfectly adequate thro the cold and damp winter months.
My local garage charged me £15 to swap the four wheels over.
I have been tempted to buy one of those wheel storage tree gismos for the garage.

I found the 255s driving terribly in the wet compared to the 275 summer tires, so not sure if I would go with a 245 setup in the rear.
They may be better in the snow but for the 10days it snows here in Belgium I think I prefer a wider tire setup and have more grip the other 100 something days I drive with the winter tires.

What make of winters were you running on the 255's to be horrid in the wet? I was mightily impressed with Conti all season contacts on the SL which has the same maximum torque as the M40i @ 500 Nm

The 235 (from Memory)!Pirelli Sotozerro tyres seem to cope ok with the 630Nm on the 335 - yes it’s got x drive but I never lacked confidence. Indeed as we were mainly in lockdown last year, the Winter Wheels remained on the car. It probably only covered 2k - it was a little softer around corners in the dry but acceptable.

maybe its just the difference with the 275 michelin ps4s'es i had before.
But they lost traction a whole lot easier when it was raining.

Getting michelin tires for the new winterset now, but i think it's mostly the width difference, and hopefully it will still be drivable on the snow with the wide tires, otherwise it will be 10days of vacation each year when its snowing

Have you thought of getting a set of all season tyres for winter instead of full winters. Here in East Yorkshire snow is infrequent, but frosty mornings are not and February can see double digit temperatures or April can see frosts. All season tyres are vastly superior in wet conditions and have a wide operating temperature range than winters.

Never bothered with winter tyres here in the U.K. if it snows they make a big difference though.

They begin to influence grip under 7°C
I never bothered years ago but after experiencing them, they are a must have!

I’m in London. We have a few weeks of temperatures under 7 degrees and really not worth spending thousands for those few weeks.

That’s why I purchased all season tyres so between November and April I’m not pussy footing around with 500 N.m on damp cold roads, they’ll work in snow and cold frosty mornings that turn into warm spring days :wink:

Hehe as long as you still drive carefully even with the winter/all season tires

also winters have not really been winters the past few years, you get 5days -3 and then 5 days 15degrees to be good you would have to switch them out every week hehe
