Winter wheels/tyres

Fat fella

Hi, I am looking for a bit of advise. (Unseasonal I know)

After repeatedly getting stuck in the snow/ice earlier this year I am now thinking about getting a set of winter wheels/tyres.
I am currently on 108's which seam to be allergic to any sort of an incline when mixed with snow or ice.
How much difference will 16 or 17 inch wheels make in the snow/ice?
I'm really not bothered what they look like, I just need to get to work and back, without my neighbours having a laugh, whilst they drive past in their Micra's.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Quite a bit on the board about winter tires so you might start with this thread...

Fat fella, I've run them last two years, will never be without them again. Was leaving snowploughs trailing in my wake last year.

Have a look for a set of steel wheels with winter tyres from somewhere like Mytyres (although you'll have to be creative in what car you choose, as there is no Z4 listed - I just used the equivalent 3 series and then the relevant dates).

Should be able to get a set of 15s for £400-£500, 16s for £500-£600 or 17s for £700-£800 (wheels & tyres).

There are plenty of 17s from 3 series on ebay for around £250 to £350
Winter tyres around £100 each
On in November off in March - essential if you want to use your car every day IMO

Was that for the Z4m mmm-five?

I got quoted 7 x 17 5 x 120.00 x 72.50 ET: 47.00 5-4-hole steel wheel (9960) 205/50 R17 93V (max 240 km/h)

would these be fit ok, they seem rather small for a z4m.

Thanks

No, those sizes were for a non-///M as that's what the OP has.

The BMW winter wheel & tyre package for the Z4M has 225/40r18 tyres all round with a 7.5J x 18 et41 front and 7.5j x 18 et20 rear , but they are £500 a corner.
The BMW winter wheel & tyre package for the non-///M is available in 205/55r16 or 225/45r17 with a 7j x 16' or 8j x 17" wheel respectively with an et47 offset all round - but again it's the most expensive way to get winter wheels.

It'd probably be simpler to pick up a used/tatty set of Z4M or e46 wheels and put your own 18" winter tyres on - you can stay with original sizes if you want to, but most manufacturers recommend narrower tyres for winter use.

Shameless plug: Ive got a set if 17" 103's in the for sale section for a mere £100 if anyone needs some rims to use. They are an 8J rim for 225 tyres all round. ET47.

Was gonna use as winter wheels this year, but think a little 1.4 Polo TDi would be better :D

Cheers for the info.

So for a non-M 3.0si coupe with
front 8Jx18 ET47 225/40/R18
rear 8.5Jx18 ET50 255/35/R18

could you go for some 1 series (E87) wheels with narrower tyres ?
front 7x17 ET47 205/50/R17
rear 7.5x17 ET47 225/45/R17
e.g. styles 142, 178, 262, 207M

or 7x17 ET47 205/50/R17 all round
e.g. styles 141, 256
