Winter Tyres

My car is due tyres fairly soon so i thought I'd investigate winter ones then get another set for the summer next year. I might even get another set of wheels to make the swap easier.
My car currently has staggered 18inch 107's fitted with 225 40 18's and 255 35 18's
Can't seem to find winter tyres in those sizes so do people fit something different? Can i even get winter tyres that will fit my wheels or do i need a different set of wheels and keep these for the summer??

I think the OEM fitment is 225/45/18 and 255/40/18, maybe that helps?

Also, I’d definitely recommend getting another set of wheels. Second hand they’re often available with winter tyres already fitted, and makes the swap easy enough

Rockhopper, this is exactly what I am in the process of doing as currently I am almost using the Z4 daily, covering 150+ miles per week and as I have a couple of surplus wheelsets I thought it a better idea to have a set of dedicated winter and summer tyres. Also my current Michelin PS4 are well past their best and certainly won't pass the MOT in January, so I have ordered a set of winter tyres for my current staggered set of 18" Style 162 and come the spring waiting in my garage are 4 x Michelin PS5 going on a scruffy set of Style 612 that I will be getting refurbished.
I have been highly impressed with 5 sets of different Pirelli tyres that I have had on my previous two Land Rovers and my current F11 5er Touring and so I've ordered a set of Pirelli Winter SottoZero 3 in the usual Z4 225/40R18 & 255/35R18 sizes. They're due late this week/early next week. Looking forward to getting them fitted and seeing how they fare

The handbook should show what sizes BMW recommended for winters, or the sticker with the tyre pressures on the driver's door jamb.

It's definitely much easier getting another set of wheels, and personally I'd go for a set of square 17" wheels - the tyres will be cheaper and you aren't looking for ultimate handling on winters anyway! If you have an E85 that isn't a 3.0Si you could even get away with 16s that would be cheaper still!

You could always fit Michelin Cross Climate 2's and run them all year, available in 225/40 R18 and 255/35 R18

You're right - I just took a look in the handbook for my E90 and for tyre pressures it refers you to the sticker on the driver's door post! :(

Anyway on that there will be a size and pressures for M & S tyres so that size(s) is probably what you want ideally.

225/45 square was a standard fitment for E85s on 8j rims with a 44-48 offset 2.3 / 2.6 bar

But if you want to go asymmetric then

Square is fine with a new set of wheels - when I bought my car it had the same tyres all round - the 255 35 18 rears are quite a chunk of money more than the fronts, they must be a less popular size I suppose.
I'm guessing I could fit 17" wheels?

When I bought my car almost 9 years ago it had a square set of standard 17" 'Daisy' 103 alloys 8J ET47 with 225/45 tyres.AETV20480948_1-1.jpg
I'm only going 18" staggered as I have 2 unused sets sitting in my garage. I'm certain similar 17" fitted with winter tyres would be fine Rockhopper

Yes, 17s would definitely work.

17" wheels like patriot66s were standard fit on quite a few E85s.

BMW 103s aka Daisy make a great winter wheel..I bough a set for £125 and had some happy winters with them on some Conti TS850 winters..just looked..typical non around..usually sell for next to nothing..

E46 wheels fit E85s too - same sizes and same offsets.

Back in 2015 I got a set of 16" E46 Style 45 wheels fitted with Michelin Alpin winters for £180. 16s fit any E85 that has standard brakes apart from 3.0Sis; although I used them on my E46 Compact and left my Z4 at home when it was cold and/or roads were salty!

I used them for 3 winters and sold them for £125 after I sold the car - bargain. :)
