Winter Tyres or All Seasons

I'd appreciate any forum members' real-life experiences of using Winter Tyres or All Seasons Tyres on their Z4s.

I need to be able to use the car daily throughout the year.

Thanks

Unless you live rurally or are expecting extreme conditions, all seasons will be fine.

Personally I use Vredestein Vortis all year round. Snow/Ice isn't an issue as its never deep/cold/long enough to cause a problem with regular city driving, and any deep snow and the car would be pushing the bumper through the snow anyway so not sure tyres would help.

If you have the money and means to have two sets of tyres / wheels and feel you would be more comfortable with them on, go for it, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

A lot depends on your circumstances and situations so only you can decide.

Would thoroughly recommend winters if you are based in Yorkshire. They make a massive difference to your ability to both stop and go in the direction you want. I had some scary experiences before I got mine. I drive my Z4 every day and the only time I had a problem was one day last year when we had sheet ice and I couldn't get the car up our steep drive.
It's also quite entertaining watching people who think you are being a complete idiot attempting to drive where they can't in their FWD cars [emoji6]

Again, depends on situation. I too live in Yorkshire however in a city setting so the roads are gritted and mostly clear of snow/ice, if we have any at all.

I've never had issues with regular summer tyres, but its not been bad weather for a number of years really. I've done all the snow and ice pan training in Norway so understand the benefits of winter tyres, however it depends if the situation and circumstances require them, or if they're a nice to have 6 days out of 365. It was a high of 14'C here yesterday...

Thanks for the replies. It's really helpful to get different perspectives.

I definitely won't be relying on summer tyres during winter months. Although I live in the suburbs my house is on a hill and the road never gets gritted.

I guess my dillemma is whether dedicated winter tyres compromise the handling too much when we get the kind of temperatures we're having at the moment (ie, 10-14 degrees Celcius) or whether all season tyres are too much of a compromise all year round.

Having done a forum search I can see that several members in the USA are keen advocates of winter tyres, but I get the impression they have much more significant snow than here.

I'd be really interested to hear from more forumites who are using all-seasons.

Thanks.

Hi,

This is my first winter using Continental TS830P winter tyres. I live in Nottinghamshire and commute to South Yorkshire most days. Winter tyres are not just about snow but have deeper tread for water. I am really pleased with them. The DSC comes on occasionally during enthusiastic driving. The car handles very well in bad conditions. Interestingly in the few days of snow which I still commuted to work in the Zed I had No problems. The road I live on has quite a steep hill to get up. Watching the numerous 3 & 1 series BMW's snaking all over the place was quite entertaining. In the Zed .... no problem. Even on sheet ice.

Admittedly I will be changing back to my Continental SP3 when it warms up.

Regards

Cavey

I have a set of winter tyres on mine at the moment and is too a daily driver.
I can say that the handling when the temp warms up like it is at the moment, the tyres are standing up quiet well to be fair. They just feel a bit wallowy if that makes sense, I wouldn't push the car to its limits but fine for normal driving.
Haven't had snow with them yet but did have ice (Not sheet, just patches on the ground) and they seemed to do well, was expecting a lot worse.
