Winter tyres help!

I'm after some cheap cheAp winter tyres / tyres and wheels. Couldn't afford to go with a second car for winter. Anyone recommend a cheap set? I would have liked to stick below £300 for wheels with tyres seeing as I might be losing my job before Xmas and I don't want to have to sell the car :(

That's a tall order for wheels and tyres. Given your situation and unless you get particularly bad winters I would be tempted save your money and see how things go.

Size?

Ive got 4 16's in the garage that have winter rubber on two wheels and nornal tires on the other two

You can have them for 150 plus delivery

Would cost ya about 100 for two more winter tyres,

Are those alloys from a 3 series?

I was thinking of the cheapest way for me to get some winter tyres. I have a spare set of 108's but getting cheap winter tyres for them seems impossible (though I have not looked that hard).

So I was wondering whether some basic 3 series alloys/ wheels would fit and be ok? or would the insurers not play ball if the tyre width was less than that originally fitted?

Yes there from a 3 series

I dunno if an insurance inspector would know or care

I think i can get very close to £300 for a set of 17,s on 4mm winter tyres ?
Wheels would be style 24 reps (as below but without "motorsport" logo )
Newly powder coated in gloss black or met silver ,, yeah you even get a choice of finish :P
PM me if interested

Sorry to butt in but has anyone run just two rear winter tyres and if so does that help or do you need four

For all conditions barring snow you should be ok , , once the pwoder falls then you may struggle
On a front wheel drive 2 winters on the drive wheels will get you around but rear wheel drives really need 4 winters , ,
Without boring you the tread pattern on winters displaces the snow to the sides as opposed to allowing it to build up in front of the tyre , , so non winters on the front would allow the snow to build up & even if the rear wheels were getting traction you would be going nowhere fast
Even if you fit part worn winters its better than full tread summers

I managed to get a part worn set of winters for my XFS from these guys http://www.topgeartyres.co.uk/ he charged me £75 per tyre for 20" :) And they are nearly new Bridgstones! He is based just off the M53 near Chester but if with the prices he charges it's worth the fuel travelling. His customer service could be better but for cheap tyres he is definitely worth a phone call.

I noticed you have M5 alloys fitted...why not put the original alloys back on or have you sold them..?

Don't have the originals. Don't even know what the originals were

How we'll will these fit considering I'm currently running 18s? The cars already low enough without being on smaller wheels

They say 15"s on the tyres in the picture

You would have to be nuts to fit winter tyres to the drive wheels of a fwd car and leave less grippy tyres on the rear. Either that or you want to lose the back end on purpose.

Maybe you could pick up a couple of part worns that are winter tyres.
It's not the best option but a reputable place would sort you out a few if asked. I used to have a deal with a part worn place... They would save me the best tyres in my size, I would go in twice as often! @ £20 a pair on my
V6 mundano I could change then when they got dirty!

I run winters on the rear and normals on the front of my 3 series and it was fine

You would have to work out if the rolling radius is the same with the bigger profile

Also if they will fit over your calipers they wont fit a 3.0i
