Winter Tyres for the Tiguan

I'm thinking about getting some winters for the front.

235/50 R18

What is the difference between normal car tyres and SUV / 4X4 tyres?

Been using them for years, recommended, but I wouldn't mix them with standards. You'll get great grip at the front, little at the back and swapping ends under braking is a real possibility.

Main diff between car and 4x4 is weight bearing (load) capacity, carcase strength. The tyres you go for need to be suitable for the vehicle.

Probably load rating - are you getting vredstein wintertracs - they are considered in LR Disco circles to be the bees knees

just check the speed rating with VW , i'm about to order a 19 " set for the wife's QashQai

I've got Vred wintracs for my Discovery 3 and the A8.

Wintracs on my Disco 3 - Amazing grip!
Mine are fitted summer and winter and at 20k still have plenty life in them. The standard Pirelli rubber was at the limit at 20k

It's been said earlier tho, put them on all four wheels (even If only 2wd) I once made that mistake years ago and will never repeat it!

If the Tiguan is 4wd it will screw the system.

I'm a convert to all season tyres, they've been fantastic on my Z3 and saves swapping.

The Zeds breezed through 6" of snow with no wheel spin or drama.

Not a bad shout that Tim. I'll check out the prices for all season.

I've got Vredestein Quadrac 3s 225/40/18 allround, I don't know what all seasons are like in really bad weather or deep snow but I found them fine in snow of 5 inches or so as tried them out on the works car park after a night of heavy snow fall and to be honest I was amazed as thought they would be a compromise. Theres no way I would drive a rear wheel car on runflats in snow again so the M135i will be put away in a few weeks :(

Tim.

Vredestein Wintrac 4 Extreme on my D3 - They are on target to do 40K - Standard Pirelli rubber were goosed 1.6 at 20k.
Summer grip and noise are absolutely fine - winter grip in DEEP snow (300mm +) and uphill, made me giggle at the cars ability.
I will fit the same again when necessary.

You have a compact off roader, have a look on www.disco3.co.uk for an opinion on suitable tyres. There is a whole section dedicated to it.

My daughter has a Tiguan and is thinking about getting Nokian WRG3's when the OEM tires need to be replaced... :driving:

Although they say in the ad' all weathers it seems to be a winter tyre

i.e. Low temperature compound and even the sipes in the tread blocks!

It's also a good excuse to properly check tyres & brakes for attention twice a year, plus an excuse to properly clean, wax & seal using poorboys, even if a little aggro to change

Anyone got experience of using Pirelli Scorpion all season tyres?

Not a bad price

I agree.
I had them on our Nissan Pathfinder during the two bad winters we had (2010-11?).
Grip was remarkable. Able to pull stranded vans up and out of ditches on snow packed roads. I used them through out the year in fact (boatLanching duties) and the were excellent in the dry. Wear rate was acceptable too

From experience I would say that the wear rate was better x2 and that's using them sumner and winter.
At the time, vredestein only did the wintracs in the required load rating for the disco 3 but they have proved to be good all year round.

Contrary to what some have said , these winter tyres are not ditch finders in the summer nor have the shredded themselves to death. I've had some decent runs down the autobahn at some non Land Rover speed and in some very hot weather.

I will buy them again.

20,000 miles and they still look like good tyres if you were buying the car!

Yes I got 18,000 out of the vreds summer and winter driving but towing a 1.2te boat will have definitely increased tyre wear.
I think thats pretty acceptable even for standard tyre.
