Winter Tyre Size - 224 wheel

Hi guys,

Hope you can me your help on this one so I buy the right tyres. I am quite satisfied with the tyre recommendations on here but my query concerns suitable tyre size.

I have put on my winter wheels on my coupe. They are a set of staggered 224s currently with 225/40/18 tyres all round which came with the wheels when I bought second hand. As you can probably guess, this leaves a heavily exposed outer rim on the rears but this isnt a concern to me as its my winter set. However, the treads are getting low, down to 2.5/3.00MM in places which I appreciate its low for winters.

I drive a mixture of none gritted minor single carriage way A roads and B road roads to work so should I get caught out by the snow I want to be confident I am sat on the best option for the car (havent had any heavy snow fall last two years but expecting it will come soon enough). Also, the road tend to have large puddles in any meaningful rainfall so this is a consideration. I usually carry 50kg of weight in the boot when snow expected to aid traction at the rear.

Assuming my priority is for best performance is there a best tyre size for me to go for? Should I stick with the standard or the 225/40's currently on? Any better options?

Thanks in advance for you help guys

224s are 8j & 9j so if you wanted to keep 4 the same tyres i would head down the middle at 235 45 18s
225 40 on a 9j is not ideal
Or revert to staggered at fronts 225 45 / 225 40 & rears 245 40 / 255 35

Mr Wilks, my apology for high jacking this thread but I have a similar question.
I'm running 108s on my 2003 3.0 ltr roadster and for the winter want to run 4 same size none run flats tyres.
What do you consider would be the optimum tyre size to give greatest choice in tyre brands
Cheers sd

225/40/18 all around. Will fit the 8.5J rear rim perfectlt
Why not 35 profile? Standard size for front 108's.

35 for the rears Chris , 40s for the fronts on factory specs
hmm i stand corrected then! thx. thought it was 35 front and 30 rear.
will be sticking with this profile spec on my 108's for summer i think though.
ride comfort is sublime on my 50 profile winter tyres however atm :)

235 for winter use is way to wide, i'm driving 205/50/17 for winter at the moment.
Why take a WIDER winter wheel in the front, then your summer wheel should be from the factory???

In that case i would first go for a 225/40 front wheel and a (slightly higher) 235/40 rear tyre

That's your call but your speedo will be off quite big.

Whenever i veer from the factory sized tyres i always check with a TomTom or similar device & upsizing profiles generally produces a far more accurate reading then the OEM over read of around 10/12%
RE the tyre widths ? The guy was asking what size would suit best if a square set up on staggered rims of 8j & 8.5j :?
235 is the best (average ) size to suit both those rim widths & 40 profile x 235 would therefore work best if a square set up is preferred

Cheers Mr Wilks thanks for the advice.
It's always quite surprising how quickly the original question becomes lost and a Chinese whisper effect takes over.
