Looking for some help. I have a 2012 E89 and have been looking to purchase winter tyres. I have access to a set of 292 BMW wheels which are:

Fronts - 17" x 8j et 29 (currently fitted with 225x45)
Rears - 17" x 8.5 et 40 (currently fitted with 255x40)

If I put winter tyres on these am I best replicating the tyre sizes or can I put 225x45 on all wheels.

Appreciate any advice on this.

You can do either but I think you'll find that winter tyres are pretty sparsely available in the 255/40 size. Better to stick to 225/45 all round which is the recommended size.

stewartw, welcome to the forum...
The conventional wisdom is that the best setup would be the 225's all the way around. However, with my first 2 Zed's I went that way with my winter tires and that worked out quite well. When I moved to my current Zed the winter wheels I had were designed for a staggered setup so I went with 225's on the front and 255's on the wider rear rims. The end result is this setup works just fine. Perhaps because the narrow tires work best in deeper snow but it not possible to drive in very deep snow in a Zed anyway.
