Winter tyre recommendations

Hi

As per the subject I'm looking for a set of 18" winter tyres for my Si so after recommendations for tyres tgat you've used that preform well?

I can't tell you yet OP!

But the last 2 winters I have had 16 inch Michelin Alpins on my E46 and they have performed well - although being in the South East you'll know they haven't really been tested much (thankfully). :)

Then on Saturday I collected a set of 18s for my Z4 with Falken winter tyres on them, so I'll find out in a couple of months. :lol:
 
Hi I’ve gone for 4 x Continental Winter Contact TS860 (Winter Tyre) 225/45 R17 H (91), Winter Tyre on freshly refinished 103s...

They seem to be rated the best for winter use taking into account that snow is not likely to be the biggest most frequent issue...ie cold, wet are the main issues facing Brit drivers...

I won’t fit them till end of October once daytime temps are constantly below 7c..

I can give you a report then..
 
For the light dusting of snow we normally get in the most of England, and the south, I’d not go for winters at all, I’d go for an all season.

You get the benefit of the winter tyre style in The cold and wet, or snow, but the benefit of a more summer-oriented tyre in the dry brakingor cold & dry conditions. Not as noisy either.

Something like the new style alll-season tyres from Michelin (CrossClimate) or Continental (AllSeasonContact).

Don’t know if either are available in standard sizes though, as I’m running them on the Alfa in 15” size.
 
I have run Michelin CrossClimate on on my daily since last winter and they worked well in light snow encountered upt' north and like a good, if slightly more forgiving summer tyre for the rest of the year, pricey but worth it.
Now I'm converted to all season (not multi season which are different and not M&S rated) I've just put Toyo Celcius multi's on my Forester Xt. Similar feel but with slightly lower ratings but about half the price. Good as they should be in the cold/ice/snow I think they would be too soft for summer use on a Zed.

Have to agree with this.

Paul get some GY Eagle F1s, you won't be disappointed, best tyre I've used in the wet, usually comes 1st or second in wet tests. Well priced and grippy enough in the dry too.

I've currently got 18s on the Si and 19s on the M, both with 'summer' tyres that don't need changing. I've also got a set of 224s I was looking at fitting the winters on and using them on the Si this winter and possibly the M as i doubt I'll sorn it next winter.

I was swaying towards Nokian WR A4s which seem highly rated now wondering whether I'm just wasting my money :? :cry:
 
Winter tyres are better at lower temperatures ie less than 7C. So if you drive on cold damp mornings you are better off even if you never see snow or ice.
Ive just bought a set of Dunlop Winter Sport 5's for my Zed, but haven't fitted then yet. They are the best rated in the very thorough ADAC tyre tests. I also had a set of Dunlop winter tyres on a Lexus IS300 a few years back and they were great.
 
Just bought some Continental winter TS860 I think they're called with black 17'' winter alloys from mr winter wheels. Will probably put them on when the clocks change as the average temperature for November appears to be 7 degrees
 
I've decided on Nokian A4's in OEM sizes on some 224's and will probably stick them on at the end of the month :thumbsup:

I have Michelin Alpins on my E89 and have found that they grip really well. A little more pricey than other tyres but in my mind well worth it.
