Winter Tyre Alloy Conundrum

So my MV2's need a refurb but winter is not far away and this has me thinking.

Currently running standard staggered set up of 225/40 front and 255/35 rears, the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's are down to 4-5mm and need replacing.

So what to do?....buy a set of 17" alloys from Ebay and then winter rubber in the recommended size of 225/45/17....then come April pay to get the MV2's refurbed and buy a new set of summer rubber.

Or stick with my current alloys, but winter rubber in the current tyre size am thinking Pirelli W240 Winter SottoZero Series 2 and stay with them all year round as others have done this and found them a good all year round tyre.

I think either way the cost will remain similar, the larger winter tyre will cost more than the 225/45 option but I then wouldn't have to figure in the cost of the extra alloys?

Depends how many miles you do a year, how long you want to keep the car and its also better to have thinner tyres for winter. You can also sell the alloys when the car goes
 
Not sure what budget you have in mind but i,l have a set of freshly refurbed OEM style 68,s going on ebay next week with winter part worn tyres .
Staggered set up with Fulda 245 rears 5mm / Dunlop 205 fronts 4mm
£435 including delivery ,

Why do they need replacing when they've got 50% of the tread remaining?

  • 8mm (new) - 1.6mm (min) = 6.4mm usable tread
  • Tyres currently on 4-5mm (say 4.5mm average) = 3.5 used and 2.9mm remaining (on top of the 1.6 limit)
  • So about 55% used and 45% remaining until you hit the wear marker
 
I would buy a second set of alloys, cheap and cheerful.

If you do end up sliding into a kerb it is going to hurt less.
 
I will buy your knackered PS3 tyres. With only 4-5mm of tread remaining I'd say £30 plus postage is a reasonable offer :)
