Hi all

Not been on here for a while but am looking to offload my 2006 2.5si as a winter project. I bought the car in Sept 2017, ran it through to September 2018 when it has been laid up. I MOT'd it late last year and the test was abandoned as the car started to heat up on the ramp. Never had a singe issue through the heat wave we experienced that summer! There is a thread on here about the potential cause which could be rectified for pence if you know what you are doing. The car will need a new brake line over the petrol tank due to corrosion and a new set of headlamp bulbs (apparently they flicker currently). There is a thread on here about a suspected timing chain issue which goes to ten pages - I spent £1200 when I first bought the car trying to resolve the issue which I identified the night I bought my new toy home - new chain tensioner, timing chain kit, two new cam hubs later - all genuine new parts but the mechanic could not solve the problem. I ran the car that summer with no issues except for the noise which was audible at low revs.

The car is clean, done 61,735 miles, inspection not due for another 13000 miles. Grey with light leather interior, heated seats, cup holders, roof motor relocated to boot and works off key - visually it looks nice.

What is it worth as a project? It must be worth £2k in parts... Would consider any decent offer - I stand to lose a shed load of money here but Mrs wants rid or is threatening to turn it into a large plant pot! Not posted anywhere else - thought I would give Z4 fans here first bite.

I can email pics etc if anyone is interested. Cheers all.

hopefully pics here....

Could you not try again with the MOT or is the car still overheating? It would be easier to shift with an MOT on and someone might be prepared to accept the engine noise if the price is right.

It’s a shame as it’s a nice low mileage car with sports seats.

At the moment it’s probably worth more in parts

I would be interested if you could sort the overheating , I am aware of the engine issue I have looked through the posts

I wouldn’t worry about the overheating at all - likely to be the thin green wire corrosion on the rad fan connector stopping the fan kicking in.

The reason I am keen on the overheating issue being resolved I could drive it home if I book it in for MOT, otherwise the cost of low loader

There used to be a rule that you could only drive it to the 'nearest' MOT centre?
I have no idea if this still applies though.
Worth checking as it's a potential £1000 fine if you're stopped.

You could always drive it until it gets hot then call AA/RAC!

Actually thinking about it, the cause might be the dreaded shot electric water pump. Have the codes been read?

Op said no overheating problems when driving, just prolonged idle. That would point to rad fan rather than water pump. Don’t forget it also failed on brake pipes though so you would really need to get that sorted first...or just take the risk. ANPR everywhere these days though.

Our 4x4 ran out of MOT by 4 months this year (totally forgot) and I drove it to Oxford, around London and plenty of other places that had ANPR and we didn't get pulled or a ticket.

Hi all

Sorry for the late reply here. The water pump was replaced not long before I bought the car. The impellor goes brittle and breaks but 99.9% sure it is the fan as the fan does not kick in when the aircon is switched on which I believe it should.

My issue is I need to employ the services of a Z4 specialist like Ducklakeview locally but don't know anyone. Can anybody assist me or point me in the right direction? I'd be prepared to ship the car within reason to said contact if the vehicle got MOT'd as I could potentially drive it home...

Help! Please...

But I would let the car go as it stands for a reasonable deal if anyone is interested...

Just a thought , could the water pump be faulty ? This may be the noise and it has now packed in Causing overheating

New items can be faulty too ?

I’m no tech just thinking aloud

I really don't think it is that...

I drove the car with the noise all through the summer heatwave in 2018 with the temperature perfectly normal... Including when sat in queues etc....

Have you removed the rad cover and checked the Green wire to see if it is intact or not? The cover should come off easy enough by undoing a few screws

No I haven’t but I believe the wire tends to break down inside rather than showing an obvious break as such....

Hi all. Just to let you know the car has now been sold to a forum member. Sorry Synthedup, I had already been PM'd by the new owner and agreed a price so gave him the opportunity to complete on the sale before I engaged elsewhere, and funds have arrived.

I have taken a big hit on this car. That's life. I genuinely hope the new owner gets the car back on the road with some cheap, forum insight magic fixes and realises the potential bargain. But yes, he has taken a gamble and fingers crossed it pays off - he has engaged a local forum member / Z4 God to assist with the regeneration so I'll watch this forum for the outcome...

I started my Zed tonight, spun it around the block and sat in it with the roof down for ten minutes. I'm gutted it is going! simple! I had a great time during the 2018 summer heat wave in it.... Its one of a small number of credible man-convertibles :driving:

Cheers all.

J
