Winter Driving

Having got stuck in heavy Dudley snow years ago in my rear wheel drive Boxster and relying on the charity of passing shoppers who pushed us up the hill from the Merry Hill centre, I'm wondering how you get on in Winter conditions in the zeddy. Does anyone change to Winter tyres or do you all just park it up until the Spring :?

Could be the only thing I miss about my TT quattro, the ability to take my missus shopping in the snow :rofl:
 
Have a winter set, they go on in Oct /nov when the morning commute temps drop. Don't see much snow but when I have they have performed very well.
Have a look on YouTube for the ford Kuga ski slope climb, one awd on summers, one fwd on winters.
 
I also have winter tyes which go on in late October or early November once the temperatures start to drop.

Bought mys of a second set of wheels and Reyes from our very own Mr Wilks. I put them on in November until March (ish). Haven't had much snow for the last few years to try em. However have drive a few rwd in Canada in snow and it's amazing what grip you actually get with winters.

I have a set of winters - but to be honest winters for the last 4 years have been quite mild.

Winter tires are not just for Snow - as most summer tires lose there effectiveness below 7 Degrees

I have a set of CSL reps with winter tyres to go on my E89........hope they look as good on the car as yours!!

I have a set of CSL reps with winter tyres to go on my E89........hope they look as good on the car as yours!!

I love the look of them, it just takes longer to clean them though

That was an interesting video, thanks. When people go up the mountains skiing here, they usually have to put chains on to get up to the car parks, I'd be willing to bet that winter tyres would negate the need to chain up on the access roads to the ski fields.
Trouble is, you'd never convince the people that close the road and force you to put chains on, that snow tyres would probably be good enough. I don't know anyone that uses winter tyres here as the roads don't get bad enough (except ski field roads).
 
It's a small cost if it saves you the hassle of a claim. Wheels are effectively an asset that shouldn't depreciate and in the long run the tyres don't cost you much more as you're using the summers less. Aside from the initial outlay it's a minimal on-going cost.
 
Wouldn't be without winters - basic O level / schoolboy physics and would you wear sand shoes in the snow?

I'm getting a BMW tyre wheel package for the 335 Xd this winter - I had the discovery on winter rubber in previous years and realise the value even on a 4wd.
Stopping is the main advantage.

The Zed just goes away for the winter.
 
I got a set of winters for my 125i when I had it. Waste of time. It was never bad enough to gain any real benefit from them that winter and the handling wasn't as good when the weather was OK.

For the sake of a couple of days a winter that the weather is really too bad to use my Zed, I stay at home. Other than that you just drive to the conditions. I've taken my Zed out in the snow and while it can be tricky on uncleared sections, once you reach the main routes they are clear enough to drive normally.

Obviously just my experience and opinion.
