Winter Driving

We have been driving out z4 about recently in ice, to get out from our lanes we have to go up some very steep lanes that sometimes i struggle in a fwd car. I have been so surprised at how stuck to the road the z4 is, I put 2x 2.5kg bags of salt in the boot and i have been able to drive around just fine. How do others in the UK find the Z4? I realise that if it snows over 1inch i will be stuck but i doubt that will happen in south England.
I havent purchased bmw winter tires or any others.

i havent been through a winter in my zed yet but plan to keep using it unless there is deep snow/ice.
The last few years ive driven a lotus elise through the winter, as long as you drive sensibly you should be ok with it :driving:

With winter tires (Blizzaks) I've never had any trouble at all getting around in snow or even ice but I do avoid deep snow. :driving:

Last year was mild and had no issues. I was away at Christmas so my Zed stayed in the garage for two weeks...

We have 3 rear wheel drive cars in our household so if the weather turns then we'll be buggered.

However, means I can't get to work and will have to stay home :D

Is there any truth to the old story that if you get stuck on a hill with a RWD car it may be better to turn around and reverse up it?

I would have thought you will find more joy in sticking something very heavy in the boot so that the rear wheels have some weight over them. If there is no weight you won't get any traction on the rear wheels regardless of which direction you choose to travel.

Didn't have any problems last year in the Z but before that I struggled big time with a manual 1 series just trying to get over the foot path into the drive

I dunno, but it definitely helped with a FWD Focus I had a few years ago- couldn't get up my road but it was fine going in reverse.

I guess with the Zed, you can just put the roof down to add weight over the rear... :D
