Wing Mirror Motors

Picked up my 2004 Z4 (E85) over the weekend and loving it so far.

Other issues aside, one problem I’ve got is that the wing mirror motors appear to have seized. Both the driver and passenger sides can move down and right, but will not move up or to the left.

Has anyone else run into this issue, is it a simple fix?
I’ve not yet pulled the mirror off to take a look, but figured I’d put some feelers out for some guidance.

Got exactly the same problem.
It's the switch contacts. Ideally you need a new one. Hopefully you don't have the folding mirrors as those switches are rare and daft prices.
Mind you Bigwinn did have one for sale recently at a good price.
If you don't need the switch for the folding mirrors then they're a bit easier to find.

Edit. It is possible to split your switch and clean the contacts. Not guaranteed to work, or to last long if it does. Plus the fact that there are approximately 3 million spring loaded components inside the casing.

I had a very similar issue - neither mirror would move down. I popped out the mirror control panel and cleaned the contact points on the circuit board and switches themselves with some isopropyl alcohol and that solved it. In my case the circuit board had some sticky residue all over it that thankfully came off easily. It's a very simple job so I'd recommend trying that first.

Thanks! Yeah, it’s the one with the folding mirrors too! Looks like I can pick up a new one on eBay for £125. Tad bit steep, I may try giving the contacts a clean first.. if all hell breaks loose, I’ll have to convince the wife it’s part of the ‘investment’ 😂

It’s in the garage doing nowt- drop me a pm if you need it!

Cheers bigwinn. Popped you a PM, contacts look clean but cleaned with some isopropyl to no avail - probably faulty

Well it's a five minute job to plug a new one in and check. If it doesn't fix it I'd be surprised, but you'd have a spare switch and it seems they're getting hard to find.

All sorted now! big props to bigwinn, and thanks for pointing me in the right direction enuff_zed! probably saved me a fortune :P

Love it when a plan comes together!

[ref]K123 MUN[/ref], just a thought. What are you doing with the old switch?
I have one that I think I can resurrect but someone before me managed to snap the top corner off the trim piece.
If you'd be willing to part with yours, assuming it's not damaged, then please let me know.
Thanks
