Wing emblem removal

Hello,

I’m looking to replace the BMW wing emblem as it’s seen better days.

I’ve seen some mentions that it is held in place by pins into the bodywork on a gasket, and others saying it is bonded on.

Does anyone have a definitive answer, and ideally best method for removal?

Thanks in advance.

If you mean the model name, then it's just stuck on. You can remove it using some dental floss/fishing line.

The BMW badge on the flanks is a moulded unit with two plastic prongs on the back..they push fit into plastic grommets set into the metal wing..they can be very diffiult to remove as the pins and grommets set together..

Plastic pry tools required and be careful not to damage the paint and or buckle the thin aluminium wing..

Often the grommets get destroyed in the process too!

If the grommets survive replacement is easy

Ok, thanks for that. At least I know the method of fixing now?

Can you see the prongs from the inner wing? Would it be possible to (very carefully) drill the prongs out?

No and yes..carefully from the outside..otherwise a bit of automotive contact adhesive to help secure it

I recently changed the bonnet and boot badges on my G29 and one of the prongs snapped in the grommet. If the prongs break off the badge and are stuck in the grommets find a small screw and gently start screwing it into the centre of the prong. Once its got enough purchase pull the screw head with pliers and both the prong and grommet will come out. Place some masking tape around the area to protect the paint work.

Great tip thank you.

Last question guys! Does the badge/bodywork have 2 or 3 pins/holes?

I’ve seen 2 different versions. I should have measured the badge, that will probably answer my question.

Thanks in advance.

Normally two.
The plastic pins are only there to make sure the badge sits straight, as it's round, and would otherwise be a bitch to get sitting correctly.

The 'roundels' (as they like to call them) are stuck onto the body with double-sided tape and have two locating pins.
