Windshield trim issue. [SOLVED]

I am attempting to replace the rubber trim around my windshield. I cannot for the life of me get it to seat properly. The top piece of trim will not stay in place. I have made sure all bits of the old trim are removed. The new trim does have the metal reinforced bit. It seems there may be another version without the metal that may be easier to install. Anyone else have issues with this?

Are you using an original BMW trim or a pattern part?
The non-OEM trims never seem to sit right no matter what you do. Most def pay the extra an get the proper rubber.

If it is an original bit, then hopefully G600’s suggestion above should see you good.
(Mine went in fairly easily without needing it tho).

I push and pull downward to try and get the trim in place but it just pops right back up and looks like this. It sits okay on the outer edges.

Yes. Mine was just a simple push in all the way round - went on easy.
Are you certain that is a genuine BMW Z4 windcreen rubber?
It was last summer mine was replaced - memory a bit hazey - but i dont remember mine looking quite like that (your first pick showing the profile and the u-shaped metal bit).

I think you need to be careful with OEM claims on Amazon.
If its the right part it will say BMW on the plastic it comes wrapped in.
Best bet is prob to go to the stealers and get one to be sure its an original part. More expensive than Amazon, but in the scheme of things its a cheap part.

The plastic that it came in did say BMW and the part its self looks like the one that came off of it, but it definitely does not easily push in. I take it you purchased yours from a dealer? That U shaped metal bit is the side piece of the trim and that easily pushes in. My trouble is the top of the windscreen. So you were just able to push down and it popped into place? Anyway one out there have pics of their replacement trim or info on the best place to buy it?

Yeah, I bought trim from the stealer -forget the price so it must have been reasonable.
And yep, just pushed in all the way round. Needed to be lined up just so, but when it was it all pushed in nice and neat. If I remember right the edges go in first as they slide down under the bonnet scuttle, then just push fit all the way round the top.

I attempted 2 non OEM parts with similar frustration to you before I just went to BMW and bought the proper bit awhich fit fine with no probs.

If yours is a pukka BMW one then dunno what’s stopping it from fitting right. All I can guess is maybe they were a bit heavy handed with the gunk they bond the screen in with and you have some excess in the channel preventing the rubber from seating in it properly?
If that’s the case you can probably (carefully) trim the excess gunk away with a Stanley knife???

I assume you have checked there is nothing obvious in the channel preventing you from stuffing the rubber in all the way?

Yea I have made sure to clear any remnants of the previous trim. It does seem as though there is excess rubber gunk that holds the windscreen in and thought that might be part of the issue. I can try and give it one more go with the trim I have before I go to the dealer. Thanks for the suggestions.

Just twigged from looking at your pic again that I may have had an easier time of it coz I have a coupe. Looks from your pic like the trim on the vert butts up against the rubber seal for the roof which I guess makes it harder to wiggle into place if it’s not spot on first time.
It was fairly easy to slide mine side to side a mm or so once in to get it sitting right as it butts up against a nice shiny painted roof panel rather than a bit of grippy rubber.

Shouldn’t hurt to trim away some of the excess windscreen bonding with a blade if you think that’s stopping you push the rubber fully in.

I figured it out. It was the rubber goop that holds the windshield in place. There was enough extra that oozed out that it prevented the trim from seating properly. It is tough stuff and it was hard to use a razor blade in such a narrow space. I found the perfect tool however... A fingernail cuticle cutter pictured below.

I was able to skim away the rubber. Quite a bit as you can see.

After that the trim slid in perfectly and 5 minutes later i was done. Thanks for the suggestions and hopefully this can help others in the future if they have trouble.
