Windshield Crack

A couple days ago I noticed a crack in my windshield forming. Its not the fisrt time I've had a windshield get cracked, just the first time in this 2006 Z4M of mine. The crack seems to start from UNDER the weather stripping near the top center of the windshield.

I havn't taken it to the stealer yet, but I phoned and they said 99.9% of the time, the windshield is not covered in the warrenty. They want $1500 to replace it.

Anyone have to deal with this? Do I need to go to the dealer? Is there something special about hte BMW windshield that makes it cost that much?

You'll need to replace the rain sensor as well but it's not a very expensive part.

Tischer BMW lists the windshield + rain sensor for $255, although my guess is that shipping alone costs anothe $100~$200.

Your dealer is ripping you off if they tell it costs $1500 to replace the windshield. Assuming parts alone costs $500, I don't think it'd take 10 hours of labor at $100/hour to replace the windshield.

does ur insurance cover the damage? in the uk we have a cover where we pay about £40 for replacement windscreen,

also the windscreen is extra special in a soft top as it has to support the whole car in the event of an accident.

Bring it to a auto glass place first and see if they can repair it. Should only be $30-50. Do it ASAP though 'cause those cracks can spread very, very fast.

The windshield itself doesn't do jack in the case of a roll-over - it's just glass. It's the A-pillars, upper windshield frame, and the roll-over protection hoops behind the seats that do the work.

I'm not sure the price is so far out. I had mine replaced the week after I purchased it and the supplier advised it would have been £700 ($1400) for the screen alone (graduated tint) Then took about 2 hours to fit.

Fortunately, as posted, above UK insurance covers screens with minor excess so it only cost £70

Called my insurance agent. The windshield is covered under my policy with a $100 deductable. Thats good news.

A regular auto-glass place came out to my house and replaced the windshield with the part indicated in a previous post. Total cost, including parts and labor? $550.

I still can't believe the dealer wanted 3 times that.
