Windscreen Wipers

Driving along this morning, windscreen wipers stopped halfway across the screen and are stuck. Washer won't work for headlight of screen. Stopped and turned car off/on and now they are going constantly no matter which setting it is on.

Anyone got any experience of this/ideas.

If it keeps going full speed I won't be able to get home as I have to wash the windscreen every 2 minutes as it is.

HELP!!

ps. I had just topped up the screen wash, coincidence?
 
No idea - but I'd pull the fuse until you can diagnose the problem before you burn out the washer motor or grind the blades off

EDIT - since you topped up the screen wash then check the connectors on that and/or remove its fuse 1st to see if the blades stop
 
the windscreen wipers stopping is probably due to the grease build up issue..
see my motor fix howto in my sig (it'll only take 45mins to an hour to do, and you can do most of it wearing gloves :P)
 
Cheers for the response, I saw the how-to that you kindly put together. Would that also cause the washers to stop working?

It's definitely intermittent, because on the motorway before it would stop halfway across the screen and not work at all. Then all of a sudden it would work. When the wipers aren't working, the washer doesn't work either. When they do, it does.

Car is not asleep on the driveway until I get time to follow the how-to and see how that works.

Further to this, and this is probably completely unconnected, is there any way that my mother backing into my car could have damaged something?

My reasoning behind this is that it is going to be an insurance job and I wonder if they could be possibly connected i.e. get them to fix it at the same time?
 
The washer spray did stop working when my wipers jammed up.

But i don't think it could be related to her backing into you, unless it damaged your light washers maybe? (I'm speculating here)..

The light washer is hydraulic and has no electrical parts in it, so no effect. Of course it's possible that the bang did something electrical or electronic to other components such as the washer motor.

Well guys, wanted to thank SK for the how-to...

I got as far as the wipers off, trim removed, fuse box lid off, but the plastic screws were so ruined that I couldn't get them out. I just went mental with the WD40 all over the bolt/motor/everything and now they work again. So at least I have pinpointed the problem. At a later date, I will make an effort to sort this out properly as per the guide.

haha.. I've had a few mental moments like that before :)

Glad you got them working, but I would imagine it'll only be until the WD40 wears off :'(
 
I've had a similar problem for some time, it got so bad that I had to do something about it. On the intermittant settings the wipers would start to move then freeze.

I tried the fix suggested here but I couldn't get the wiper arms off despite trying loads of WD40 so ended up getting a new wiper motor fitted which cost £267. :(

It's seems the original part has been replaced by a newer version so maybe BMW are aware it had a fault. It would be interesting to see how many people here have had the problem.
