Windscreen washer blockage

Last week I finally gave in and put more screenwash in my car. It must have been empty as loads went in. Since then however the pressure of the water has been minimal, just hitting the bottom of windscreen, and then yesterday it now just trickles out of the jets. It makes a noise but my windscreen is filthy so quickly in this weather. How can I fix this without taking to a garage. I have read a few other posts but they don't make much sense to me. Please can u help me but put it as though it's an idiots guide!!! Thanks in advance!!

I can drive for solid hour or so and it's no different from when I take it out of garage in morning! :(

Take off the wiper blades and just trim it,nozzles releases easily or else checkout the squirter holes for blockage, plug it up with wax. :-)

i would say its just bloomin cold, driving aint going to warm it up, the nozzles are outside the engine bay so they are still exposed to frost, its roughly -5DegC here

try peeing on them, that may unfreeze them

My screen washers are heated......so no problems. I thought they all were! If you have let it get really empty then perhaps the pump has just picked up the inevitable crud that seems to gather in the bottom of the reservoir over time - good clean may help. Start with a small pin in the holes on the jets on the bonnet - just push it in gently and wriggle it about (oh what have I said....... :P )

if they are heated i assume the heater to be in the bottle, does water stay in the pipe running to the jets or does it drain back to the bootle? If it remains in the pipes then will this not freeze?

like an outside tap, the bit that freezes is the bit that is outside

No the heating is on the nozzles, there is a lead running off them. I haven't checked to see if I had them, I presumed as mine have never frozen up (but it was still cold enough to freeze when it hit the screen). Heated washer jets have been available on most cars for years, my 99 Focus had them as standard at the time, so surely out cars at least had them as options?

this is a new 1 to me, i will have to check at weekend, i will also check on my golf

Just searched out a brochure online for the M's, and heated nozzles are standard so I do have them. And it was standard on the E85 3.0 according to another brochure I found, so surely would be on your car Taz?

I have a problem with mine too, I top it up, it runs out the bottom all over the road, within a couple of hours minimum, and a day at most, again checked out at the dealer, could find no problem,??? any one know of any particular point I should be checking to find a pipe off,or a split.? I have access to a ramp at work so I can sort it quickly if I know where to start looking...

ok mynamesnotbob i will check it out tomorrow

ps is it dave, or may be paul, or possibly even robert

Do you have headlight washers? If so it's typically bumper off and reconnect the unions on the hoses that push fit together then are locked together with little C clamps.

If not then look at where the pump fits to the reservoir.

Did you find an answer to this problem? Mine is suffering from the exact same symptoms....empty, filled up now no pressure, must be an air lock somewhere, can anyone shed any light?

Hi, this sounds like a blockage of the filter that sits between the washer pump and the water container .. (even using OEM washer fluid can eventually block the filter, causing the symptoms the original poster states).

Have a look at the pic below, you just unplug the power lead from the top of the water pump, twist the whole pump unit to the left and lift out, the filter may or not come out with it so watch it doesnt drop off and fall into the engine bay or to the floor under the car.

If the filter doesn't pop out, just flick it out with your finger nail.

Give the filter a really good clean in some warm soapy water, (mine didn't look too dirty on first inspection).

Dry the little filter off, then reverse these instructions .... Done !

I should add though, you say you have filled the washer tank up again? ... As soon as you remove the pump and filter, all of that water is going to run out of the bottom hole of the water tank, I'm talking from experience here

I kept my finger over the hole whilst my son went off to do the filter cleaning bit !

Cheers..

Fantastic Muso, great instructions,
I will give it a go today and let you know the outcome.

I have this problem and with a trip to London looming i decided to get the dealers to have a look at it. I must point out that i had not seen this thread previously!! anyway the stealers wanted to charge £82, claiming the inner arch needed to come out and access can only be had through this.. wankers arent they?

I will be cleaning this tomorrow when i get home to it, not been near it for over a week now!
