Windscreen replacement

Hi all!
My windscreen moulding is getting off in small chips, enough now for my finger to go though it... I have asked the BMW garage next to my place about a replacement, but they told me they would have to remove the windscreen to do that, which is risky and will cost me almost the same than replacing the windscreen (too bad when you think the moulding seal must cost around £20... :roll: )

Before making any decision, I would like to know if there are different types of windscreen for E86?
I believe mine is a little tinted compare to other cars, and I would like to keep it like this if I had to replace it.

Sounds like you would be better off if your windscreen had a crack in it then you could get the whole thing replaced under your insurance, and I assume they would do the seals at the same time

This was suggested by BMW.... no wonder why insurances costs are so high! Anyway, I have to get this rubber replaced as I am getting worried of water ingression..
I just spoke to BMW again, they state that the windscreens are all the same, so I should get the exact same part that the original one fitted now.

Can't remember however where I read someone complaining his replacement windscreen was different and was not happy with the installation...
BTW, has anyone experience the same cracking/wear from the moulding seal? Car is now 8 years old, so it seems to me a very premature wear!
 
The seal isn't actually a seal, it's just rubber trim to hide the windscreen adhesive underneath. Yes it cracks after a while.

Replacement is your best bet and they'll provide a pattern part trim aswell. You just need to watch that it doesn't crack in the top corners as 2 I had did, but the 3rd one has been fine.

With regards to the actual windscreen, they will ask whether it has a top tint and rain sensor.

Shall we therefore assume you are one of those who try to get other people to pay for things because you don't want to? It's not an honest way of life even if you try and dress it up with, 'oh, but accidents happen' and, 'Whoops, and just as I said that...'

Of course you're not like that. For genuine insurance claims most insurers will have a nominated supplier in place. This arrangement is worked out on price and guess what? It does not favour the consumer. IOW, the glass will be a fake ie not genuine BMW branded; the trim will also be a cheap knock-off made from recycled bin liners and it can also be a lottery as to who turns up on the day to fit it all in.

Removing and refitting the windscreen is the correct way to fit a new trim properly. Contrary to what anyone tells you, the windscreen can be removed without breakage and an experienced technician will also avoid damage to the vehicle. Of course, there is some risk attached but with the right tech on it we're talking about +/-1% risk of damage.
