Windscreen replaced but not happy.

What happens if you break the rear screen on the roadster? IIRC you can't get a new screen - it comes as one unit with the fabric hood. Does the ins co still pay?

I don't see how you would damage it but if you did I don't think they'd cover it. With insurance it's just for the windscreen since it's likely to get chips and cracks which can be a safety issue. I'm not even sure what would happen if you had a side window smashed, I suppose it would be part of a vandalism/theft claim.

My parents had their rear window smashed by a thief on a car, and they only had to pay the £50 glass excess

I'm concerned! I have a scratch on the passenger side of the windscreen and need to get it replaced eventually. Unfortunatley I took out one of those insurances where windscreen replacement isnt covered...apparently more and more companies are making this an optional extra so beware as I never knew at the time and wasnt informed!

Autoglass want £650 to replace it, havent tried the dealer yet. Best price I have been given is from AutoGlazing who said around £350, anyone ever used them? I'm loathed to spend £600+ especially when it seems everyone gets such a bad service from some of the big name places.

Darren, just don't get it replaced until your insurance has run out, then make sure you have windscreen cover when you renew

Can they fix the scratch with resin for the time being, to stop it getting worse?

Hi all,

I've literally just had my windscreen replaced by autoglass, and was reading this post very thoroughly over the last couple of days to make sure I checked the car over thoroughly before they left.

Scuttle panel has been taken off and replaced well, so no issues there, but glass doesnt seem to be fitting very well, drivers side is completely flush ad looks excellent, but passengers has some pretty big gaps, at the roofline big enough to get a finger in!

Pictures below, let me know if you think this is unreasonable? Also, i discovered a couple of paint chips, I'm not overly bothered about them as I kinda expected to have one of two and they are very minor, although still not great!

Please let me know if you think Im just being too fussy!

You're not being fussy at all, your problem is bigger than you think :(

It looks like your glass is 5-6mm too low in the frame, it didn't look right when I saw your pics and after checking my car, it's definetly wrong.

The rubber trim at the top should not be level with the top of the pillar, it should be 5-7mm higher, you can almost see the old dirt marks where it used to sit. This should sort out the gaps at the side when it's fitted properly, it's shouldn't be bending away from the pillar so much on the first photo.

If you feel the rubber trim across the top, you'll probably feel a big gap under it where the glass ends before the frame starts, there's still one on mine but it's a lot narrower than when I first had it replaced.

Definetly get on the phone to them, even take it to a dealer to get the dealer to look at it and compare it to others, just for a bit of backup when you contact Autoglass.

Thanks Herminator,

After writing the post I decided I just wasnt happy with it, and got on the phone to Autoglass, the guy on the phone was reasonably helpful and they have arranged to remove and refit the screen.

Although that said I'm really not happy about it as they should have done it properly in the first place, not only do I have to waste another saturday waiting in for them to fix their mistake I've also got a couple of chips for the privelige!

Once its sorted a formal complaint will definitely be going into Autoglass HQ!

Will let you know how it goes..

I need to replace my windscreen after a stone hit it this morning (already had a glue repair on a previous hit) but am now a bit concerned about what to do after reading this thread. I don't want to spend £££ at BMW if I can get it for £50/70 on insurance, but also don't want a botch job. Anyone know who MoreThan use? All advice appreciated.

Speak to more than and state that the rain sensor will need BMW kit and workshop time to recallibrate, advise them that the only one stop shop solution is for a main dealer to fit the new genuine screen.

Elephant went with this and it was relatively painless....

I got my insurance company to put a new one on my MR, insisted on an OEM screen as it was within 3yrs old.

Fits perfectly, autoglass did it.

How will I know if they fit an OEM screen? MoreThan want Autoglass to fit it, or for me to pay more if BMW do it, which I'm not prepared to do

Autoglass told me they didn't have the equipment to reset the rain sensor and that the car would need to go the dealer....

Autoglass are rubbish. I had an old style Mini, crack in the screen that would fail an MOT. Called Autoglass who came out to the house. Now an old style Mini must be the easiest car to work on. Peel away the rubber strip and the windscreen falls out. But no Autoglass man manages to put the screen in at a slight angle (resting on the bodywork). First drive and the screen shatters under tension from being in the wrong position. And then the nonsense starts, my fault your fault etc. Eventually they replaced FOC. I would not let them near my BMs (Z4, 325) or any other car I drive. You get what you pay for and if you go through BMW then OK you pay a premium but at least you have a degree of comeback if it all goes wrong.

Had problems with autoglass too. Left the lower winscreen cosmetic strip away from the glass, damaged it then rebuilt and bonded it in. Took a while to get it all sorted.

Problem was for me that if you go it alone then you have to pay the full excess of £500, with Autoglass it was just £75, so not really an option.

No problems so call 'resetting' the rain sensor.

There was no "reset" that needed doing when they did mine.

I only paid a £60 screen excess and BMW fitted mine....at the time it was the very same discussions on rain sensors which led me to believe they need resetting or recallibration as did discussions with BMW Colchester which were used as leverage with elephant. Either way I hope u get it fixed to your liking, I was given a choice of BMW screen with and without tinted sun shade at the top so clarify what autoglass will fit and whether it comes with the sensor.

Good luck!

I was told that BMW could do the work but I would have to pay the £650 and send the invoice in. Yeah bloody right! Can see that ending in tears, so it is Autoglass doing the work on Friday morning from the Bracknell office. Here's hoping they don't make a right royal **** up! Oh, and it is the tinted screen they are fitting.

I rekon you will be ok, just WATCH them like a hawk when they do it. The best hour you will spend making sure you save hours later if you have to sort issues when it's too late.

The main one imho would be to put a mark on the top windscreen rubber where the glass edge rubber runs onto the roof cross-member rubber (some chalk maybe)
Do the same at the bottom too once the plastic covers come off.

The screen should fit square and nice top and bottom. It seems to be the fitting too low down in the aperture that causes problems as it then has too much gap at the sides.

If you can find something appropriate, those polycarbonate 'wedges' the right size are probably a good bet. I saw BMW using these on the Megafactories to set the windscreen location, the gap should be the same size and tight both left and right sides near the bottom and top of the A pillar.
Find the right sized wedge and check it before to make sure you know how it should be!

As said though, it should be fine, but I would watch them! Brand of glass also is not an issue as long as it's someone good like Pilkington etc, the screens can actually be better made than BMW ones (due to more modern process/standard since the screens were originally made)
