Windscreen - new one

Hey

I'm one of these peeps that hates a dirty windscreen and always washing it.

My car has done high mileage and most of that has been on the motorway I think. As a result the windscreen really is pepper potted with chips (not the salty fried tasty kind, but the nasty things created from road projectiles).

Just wondering A) rough ideas of cost of new one and B) are there any special things you can get with it e.g. anti glare or anything that you may recommend? I've never had it done before so new to the process really.

Best

If you ring your insurance company most will repair chips at 15 and the complete screen at 70 of there's too many chips to be worth fixing. And it won't affect your premium

Really - that's hard to believe, surely its counts as a claim? Will have to check the small print on my policy.

Nope not on mine windscreen cover kind of acts as a separate policy within a policy (same with keycare) so it has its own excess separate from your normal excess and doesn't count as a claim the same way a normal claim does.. You don't have to declare a windscreen claim at renewal and AFAIK it doesn't show up in your insurance history

I've had 3 new windscreens in 4 years of Zed ownership! Bought it with a damaged screen and then 2 cracked ones caused by lorries. I can confirm it doesn't affect your no claims, nor does it increase the cost of your premium.

Best thing to do is wait for your screen to crack  and phone your insurance company for a new one.

Just be careful with the screen they fit, speaking from experience you want a genuine BMW screen and rubbers, make sure they will give you that and not a substandard job

Windscreens are generally paid for as a part of comprehensive policies (not third party F&T) and don't affect NCB or count as a claim.

I had my XF screen replaced last week at home. They offered to repair the chip for £25, but as the screen was delaminating I had it replaced for £75. I also specified a quality oem screen not pattern part, so had a Pilkington fitted which would have cost in excess of £1k being graduated, heated and soundproofed.

Be aware though if the fitter (like Autoglass for common cars) makes or sources pattern parts then they will try to fit those.

Ok thanks guys will look into my insurance to see what the score is.

The thing is the chips are very small. More marks than actual stones stuck in there, so waiting for it to fully crack wont happen. However im not sure if i want to be spending over £200. Hmmm.

I might just give autoglass a call to for cost of bmw screen. Hopefully i can wangle something with the insurance.

i got a crack too big to repair on a screen along with some chipping like you describe a few years ago but they would'nt change it so I used a centre punch and hammer to give it a big proper 'bullet' chip, looked just like a big stone had hit it in the field of view. Nice new screen installed. A bit naughty I suppose but the old screen was dog eared.

Hope you're not with LV, as their windscreen excess for a Z4M is £190.

They seem to have different excesses for different cars as the Alfa is only £70.

I'm going to see if my chip is repairable, but it's very low down and the screen has millions of grit scars in it anyway.

On my previous 2 BMWs a small piece of spark plug ceramic accidentally 'fell' on the windscreen leaving a terrible crack in each ! :D

I changed mine through the insurance, it was hinted when I called the broker that the screen (because of the amount of chips) caused a lot of glare and therefore was dangerous. This is what I did and they changed it no problem

Mine cracked this afternoon as Autoglass were in the middle of injecting the chip.

A new screen (Pilkington I've been told) & surround booked in for next Friday.
