Windscreen Chipped

So annoying when its happens, stone flicked up ...thwack.....lovley big chip :x

Anyhow getting windscreen changed this weekend and have ensured that I'm getting a rain sensor screen replacement. Anything else I need to know/tell the windscreen guy before he changes it? I hear you have to let it set for a couple of hours afterwards?

Cheers

Is the chip too big to repair ? I've had 4 chips filled in (on this Zed) and the windshield is fine. Did the same with the M3 and the Z3.

Why do you need to have the rain sensor replaced? Does it not work?

The rain sensor is not integral to the windscreen and can be removed and will have to be before they pull the glass.

mcbee is correct about getting the chip fixed. Unless the chip is HUGE, then it only takes about an hour to fix a chip and is way less money.

Assuming you do have it replaced ensure that they do not damage the plastic trim that clips across the base of the screen and under the wiper arms. The fastners are easily broken off and it's difficult for them to make it seat flush on the screen either.

The cosmetic rubber trims down the sides are also difficult to get straight, so check those.

Mine had a 4-6 hour cure time when done, so ideally have it done then just leave it garaged overnight

You can get a home kit and fix it yourself for pennies.

Anyone tried these kits?

Not yet but considering it. My car had a chip in the windscreen that had been repaired (not very well) and there are still tiny cracks on either side of the repair which will get worse in the cold weather so I need to get it fixed. The windscreen guys won't touch it as it has already been repaired by someone else so looks like I'll have to do it myself.

Checked youtube and it seems pretty simples.

Thanks for the tips CJ10 I will mention the trim before he starts. To be honest the chip is not that big in the cold light of day but I know it will annoy me. I can have it repaired for free and risk not having a perfect job or pay the small excess and have a new screen.

With regard to the windscreen they asked me is it a/ A rain sensor screen b/ Have a black border at the top or c/ have a green border at the top (apparently some have a green border at the top of the screen, mine doesn't. Looks like it might rain tomorrow which is going to be an issue

The windscreen sensor must be replaced with the screen AFAIK.

My sensor de-laminated and BMW had to replace the whole windscreen in order to change the sensor.

Of course it means I have a scratch-free screen on a 5 year old car so I'm quite happy.
