Nothing to do with Zeds but there are some experts on here.

Trying to upgrade ny daughters Sony laptop running windows 7, with SP1.
Each time it and a few other upgrades it fails and gives errors.
I've read loads of articles and am confused, but theynindicatenit's known issue with SP1 related to Virus checkers, corrupt files, etc.
Run the windows readiness tool and the Windows 'Fix-it' to no avail.

Windows was pre installed so I only have the self created restore disks.

Is there any way to upgrade to SP1, without doing a full restore from scratch and rebuilding the entire laptop?
 
have you tried clearing: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

or at least copying before clearing just in case...
 
Thanks guys - will look at those 2 things this evening when I can get my hands on the laptop again. (have you ever tried to take a laptop off a student studying for exams....)

Do it whilst she is sleeping.....mornings are generally a good time :thumbsup:
 
If the laptop is important to the student is it not a bad time to be messing with Service Packs anyway, especially if it proves to be problematic. As long as the virus protection is up to date I'd just leave it well alone until after exams.
 
Sars - this one is studying for Law. Up before me and works to after I'm asleep. Wish she'd get a life or go out, but she's dedicated.

God point sp3ctre. She is forced and regimented to have everything backed up and we have a desk/workstation also set up for her.

Have a look in the system event log and see if there's any indicator about what made it fail. Frequently it can be something really simple/dumb.

Click the start button, right click on "computer" and click "Manage"
Computer Management will open
Click the arrow to the left of "event viewer", click the arrow to the left of "Windows Logs"
Look at the system log, and also the setup log.
You can right click on the log (in the left pane) and filter it to show warnings, errors and critical events. That'll filter out all the "standard" stuff.

If you find errors related to the install of the service pack, you can google the error code, or look on the Microsoft Technet site.
 
Thanks guys for the tips - I intend to work through them.

Currently not allowed near the laptop and to sp3ctre's valid point, there is no point in me risking something at a critical stage of my daughter's revision. Regardless I get the blame if anything is not perfect :)
