Window Switch Coding ?

Hi folks

My cousins E89 has developed a fault whereby all the windows will drop when opening the roof and the passenger window will drop when using the passenger side window switch. However none of the windows work from the master switch on the drivers door, the mirror switch on this unit still works. All indications are a defective switch, but having tried the switch from another car it still fails to operate. We have been told by various electricians that a new switch will need coding at BMW, anybody have any knowledge on this.

I know there is a chance that it could still be the footwell module but starting with the obvious first

Thanks in anticipation.

Yeah, that's bollox  The switch is just that, a switch. There is no module or canbus in it, just the switch (switches). The mirror side of it is separate to the window control.
Just as a matter of interest, did the replacement exactly match the original? Ie; was it from an E89 (or E93)?

Thanks Dave, confirmed my views that they were talking from the wrong orifice. Replacement switch from an E89 so fault must be elsewhere. Looks like a long road ahead with some testing of other areas.

I also have this issue. I was pulling a tinted film off my windows at the time and the windows all dropped and then didn't work with the driver door controls, but they will all drop and open withbtge roof mech as described above. I wonder if static elec was the cause as I pulled the film off.

I have seen some info on using software to reset the footwell module but not clued up enough to try it yet. Does anyone have a step by step guide? I have laptop connector and have downloaded various software

To reset the FRM is a specialist job performed by someone who knows what they are doing and with specific piece of kit. There are videos on YouTube that tell you what to do, but if you screw it up then you need a new FRM.

If the windows are operating in any way then I doubt it'll be the FRM that has gone. The drivers switch unit is all on a PCB, so it's susceptible to moisture being in that position so can short out.

Ok thanks Dave, I'll keep an eye out for a replacement. Can you use e93 units or does it have to be e89?

I think it has to be an E89 specific version..

I have had the same, windows down wouldn't go up.
Connector in door, seems the negative pin bad contact, no illumination.
Clean connector with contact cleaner, made sure fastened tight, all good some several years now.

Update, I bought a replacement driver window switch from ebay, scrap yard say it is tested but it doesnt work at all.
Its worse than my suspect one, on which the mirrors still work.

The part is off a 2009 3.5i part #9180313, i have a 2009 2.3, part #9177822.

I see another e89 switch on ebay with part 9216107.

Are these interchangeable or do I have a duff part? All three of these part numbers are the version without folding mirror button.

I don't suppose there is anyone in north manchester has a Z4 I can test these switches in?

Do you have electric seats..that’s a further sub division..

Here you are ..

Thanks B21 that has helped, looks like I have the wrong switch.

Looking for used, I need either 61 31 9177822 or 61 31 9216107.
Nothing available right now, other than from Lithuania, so I've gone for a new one, fingers crossed.

Update, got the new switch from LLL parts and it works! Delighted.
Now just need some nice weather and balls of steel to sort my wonky roof out.

Do you still have the part 9180313? My drivers switch physically broke so I ordered what I thought was the correct part (from Lithuania) but it doesn’t work. I have no mirror control.

Part I got was 9216107. Turns out I need 9180313 (same as my old one) or 9217368.

No mate I returned it for refund from bmw-parts on eBay.
He has relisted it. I offered 90 and he accepted it.
