Window Regulator

Hi folks,

question about a window regulator. Mine has gone so took it back to the garage and theyre quoting £320 for a new regulator and fix. Just wanted to check in to see if thats realistic to what I should be expecting to pay. they reckon its £150 for the part plus labour & VAT

The price is about right for the complete unit, not the most difficult job if your handy with tools, as above you could buy a repair kit

ive searched the forum and seen repair kits talked about for about £40? I know it may be a bit of a chicken and hen situation but is the repair kit a guaranteed fix? i.e id rather not get the door off and it not work. the motor seems fine when i push the button it makes the right noises but then theres some awful crunching going on occasionally, the window has slipped down about 4 inches so doesnt close properly.

im not handy at all by the brother in law is a mechanic so im hoping a few beers will do the job

Like others have said, there are a few good 'how to's' with pics on here if you do a search
Mine went about 18 months ago - I think the complete unit at the time was slightly less than you have been quoted
Sounds like it's just the cable from what you have described.
A mechanic mate did mine, takes a while to get everything stripped out (don't forget there is an airbag in there as well!) - more fiddly then anything else

I considered fitting just the cable. I'll be honest I took the approach that once it was off, it wasn't coming off again. :D

If your bro in law is a mechanic why are you going to a garage?

Unfortunately he is a fair distance away. Plus I'd rather not keep going to him for minor issues. I took it back to the garage I bought it as it's local to get it diagnosed and then I can work it out from there.

By the sounds of it a repair kit is going to be the best bet.

Fair point if he's miles away. When did you get the car? Less than 6 months and you can give it back to them to fix.

I've had it 3 months, when I got it they said that there was a warranty on the engine and gear box but they won't fix the window as it's not covered by that. I would have thought that as it's a relatively small thing they would have sorted it but no such luck it would appear

I think I'll have a look around as the price quoted was based on the garage calling a main dealer for the part, it's just a question of whether I get the whole set or just the repair kit at the moment

They can say what they like but it also depends how much of a fight you want to put up.
When you buy there is a reversed burden of proof for the first 6 months, which means the fault is assumed to have been present at the time of purchase unless the retailer can prove otherwise.
So you could take it back and tell them to fix it, new mech and all as that's what they say is needed. If they say they won't you can pay them but would have to take them to court to get the money back.

you can buy repair kit for £25 . replaced both on my old z4 ,

theyve taken the door off to check and reckon its not just a snapped cable, there was mention of a dyno? either way they reckon a full kit is required not just a repair. is the repair kit exactly the same as the full kit?
as you can probably tell im not very mechanically minded :D

For the quoted cost involved I'd look to make them cover it - a little bit of hassle but a big saving. Remember, they would have to prove the fault wasn't present at the time of sale.
