Window Regulator + Motor Dead :(

It finally went! I guess it was a case of inevitability with the creaky/squeaky noises it was making when hot. It now jams completely around 1/3 the way down

What has surpised me however is that the Motor also seems to be dead! Took the thing apart and found the the graphite brushes were VERY thin and the motor only spun when the casing was not installed correctly (wonky casing = wonky shaft = just touching brushes??)

So guys/girls my question is this! The whole mechanism seems a little tricky to work with. Id say im a competent spanner jockey (i can do things like Brakes, Exhausts, manifolds and even helped with a cylinder head), but this seems a bit too fiddly! So...
1. Should i get a 2nd hand item (one thats known for its reliability issues no less) from a scrapper and self fit?
2. Buy a brand new regulator and self fit?
3. Sod it - take it to a dealer/indy...
4. Any forum members fancy a go!? :D

Any input from people in the know would be very appreciated :)

I've done windows before, and for me, the worst part was always dealing with the interior trim parts (although adjusting the glass to get a proper seal when fully closed can be a bit fussy on some cars - I don't know about the Z4 though). If you have already taken it apart once and know your way around, your are already half way there. I'd buy new parts and self fit.

I'd go as per ay8306 and buy new and fit.
The biggest saving is the labour on doing it compared to buying an unknown life expectancy 2nd hand part then collecting and shipping it.

Trim is easy to remove if you have a torx set. Thankfully not done the motors on mine but had everything else out the door :)

Right then cheers guys, looks like ill do it myself :) I suppose having a separate one will allow me to see easily where everything goes!

Ive just gotta somehow get this crappy BMW TIS DVD working on Windows Vista/7!! Might try my XP64 work PC.

If you do get it working on Vista let me know what you did. Never spent any time looking at it, but I run it on an old pc with XP.

you could always install into a Virtual VMWare XP box running under Vista/7?

Yeah mate i think thats a logical route. Will probably create a VM image with the ETK/TIS etc running on XP32. CJ10 if you want a copy when i've done this, let me know :)

I fitted mine myself. There is lower bolt that has a torx setting. No to be horsed up. Have a search on this forum. Thats where i got the info from.

Ed - that would be great - let me know when it's done and we can PM details :)

I fitted mine the other week, not too difficalt. It's a bit tricky sliding the window onto the sliders (would be easy with an extra pair of hands) and i had the same problem that it wouldn't go all the way down.
I had to force it down and snip the cable so I could unbolt the window fixing through a hole close to the bottom rear of the door.
With the glass removed its about 5 bolts and the whole thing comes out easy.

The other thing that was a pain was the door insulation, whilst trying to pry it apart I ended up obliterating it! :headbang:
