Window Pain... (window regulator)

I noticed the other day that my drivers side windows was really slow and jerky going up and down. At the time i thought nothing of it as it was -2 and so i just thought it had a bit of ice in there.

Now it has warmed up the problem still persists. It makes crunchy noises and jerks as it is shut.

Does it just need a drop of oil perhaps? My car is always kept covered so never gets rained or snowed on.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the mechanism is failing :( - sounds like what happens when the cables start to fray or the sleeves get worn - they make a noise and start to catch/jump.

Eventually something will break and then the window won't work.

Sorry :( but no point lying!

Maybe someone will come along with a better idea thats a simpler fix - there's a slim hope that my knowledge may not be right - its based on VW windows - but as far as I know, they all work the same/similar.

Never tried on a z, but once you work out how to disassemble the door, its a relatively easy diy job on other cards i've tried on. Trouble is, the parts are damned expensive (again, based on VW, rather than BMW). Got a golf thats gone for the third time, gonna convert it to manual for the summer (its 12 years old)

Thinking - could be the motor, which is probably replaceable on its own without doing the whole mechanism.

You should get it to a dealer or experienced indie to let them see/hear and and give you a better idea than my internet guess!

demon8991, busy so this will be brief... sounds like the window regulator, do a search for that and you should find loads of info. I'd stop using / testing the window until you've had the door card off and seen what the problem is - in accordance with the findings on here. IIRC relatively simple maintenance but costs a few pounds to fix.

Maybe re-open the first thread and add "window regulator?" to the title - may prompt a respsonse from someone in the know.

Good luck

Sounds like the cable mechanism is fraying...seems to be a common issue. I replaced one of mine a couple years back...a bit fiddly but not too difficult a job to do youself. If money is tight, try one of the online breakers.

Yep sound like the regulator failing.... both of mine have gone and the car is only 4 years old :x It will eventually make a loud bang (the cable snapping) and then the window wont wind up or down (apart from you pulling it manually).

Re-cost/fixing. I did my driver side one back in November and have just got the part to do the passenger one that went last week. £110ish delivered from Joe @ Sopers of Lincoln (do a search) and as said is a bit fiddly to fix but relatively easy DIY (having somebody to help you is a big +). I have the TIS info for doing this job if you want me to email it to you?

Mine has just gone and I am doing it myself. Bit of a crunch noise and it stopped working. If you can still hear the motor working then it is the window regulator these are around £120 plus VAT from the dealer or around £90 delivered from a breaker. Just a point to remember, if your car has side airbags be carefull. Make sure you disconnect the battery and leave it for around 30 minutes before getting too close to it!!!

Mine went and required a regulator, cost about £160 all done. Check the threads, I remember reading posts about a simple screw that comes loose and if tightened can prevent failure.
