Window fell out!

Well, this morning it was a bit icy.

I jumped in after spraying on some de-icer on the windshield, then brought both side windows down to "clean" the water of them, allowing me to see out.
However, as the driver side came down, it obviously caught on an ice lump and became dislodged.

There was a metallic "thunk" and then the front part of the glass slid down deep into the door (glass now at a tilted angle).
Panicing a bit, I hit "up" on the window control, which worked for a few moments, but then the glass completely disappeared into the door.

Now, the motor moves up and down, but no glass appears.
I didn't hear any shattering or cracking as it disappeared, so I reckon it's just come off the runners and is sitting pretty inside the door.

So far, I've taken the neg term of the battery, and have aquired some tools in preperation to remove the doorcard.
However, I'm looking for any advice on remounting the glass on the runners and any information on how much of a PITA this is going to be to resolve?

(No, not taking it to a dealer or an indy. Wanna do it in my lunch hour - before it pi**es down later)

i think it may be a bigger job than that...... i had it happen to my other car and the clips that hold the window to the motor snapped completely.

i would go and get some binbags just incase it decides to rain and you cant fix it

Hopefully this link might help a bit : http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210510

I've some tarpaulin ready, but if I cant fix it, it means the car isn't drivable... which is NOT GOOD at this time of year (only car).
If worse comes to worse, I'll probably just "bodge" it into a closed position and hope for the best.
No idea if that's going to cause come closing issues tho, as they do drop when the door is openened dont they?

Yep - it's trigger by the latch in the door... looked at this for someone the other week. If you use a screwdriver to simulate if taking the catch you'll see how it works - not sure if it's a cable you can disconnect if you need to bodge it.

Good luck - these things always happen when the weather's this miserable!

ok.. got the doorcard off, and have managed to align the front clip back onto the window nicely.
However, can't figure out the rear window clip works.

seems theres a metal "wedge" and a plastic "sleeve".
the sleeve is attached to the rear end of the window, whilst the wedge appears to wedge the plastic sleeve against the window and the traveller bracket.
theres a bolt which I THINK is used to pull said wedge, through a hole in the window and sleeve, tightly against the traveller.

just wish a: I knew how to tighten it, as no socket or allen key will fit in the space, and b: if I'm actually right!

yep.. that's the bit that isn't a problem :)

I've reconnected that to the front of the window and that's working fine... its the rear connection to the traveller I can't work out..

this diagram:
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E85/Roadster/Europe/Z4_3.0i-M54/RHD/N/2003/march/browse/vehicle_trim/door_window_lifting_mechanism/

has the bits i'm talking about (found no11 in the bottom of the door.. no10 is attached (somehow) to the bottom of the window glass).

from what I figure, i'm missing the middle bit of part 11, but the bolt (8) does hold it in place.

I just can't tighten it enough!

Perhaps you have to raise the window to fully closed or open to get access to it to tighten? Or is it that the bolt has run out of thread or bottomed out and you're in fact missing a part?

Obviously need the ensure the airbag is connected up if you switch on the ignition.

I have the TIS guides for: Insulation, Cavity Cover Strip, Glass and Regulator remova/refit here if you need them (plus all Torques). If so send me your email addy and ill send a Zip file with all the xps (internet explorer) files in. I sent them to a few members earlier in the year :)

Ed....

I am about to replace the regulator in mine as the wire snapped so any chance you could send this over to me? I will PM you my email address.

Cheers

I foolishly tried to open my driverside window when it was frosty. It opened but when I tried to close it, it made a crunching sound. The dealer said there was problem with the regulator and quoted me over £500 to fix, good thing it was still under warranty.

Moral of story, never try and open your window in frost and snow.

all fixed (sort of).

I'm definately missing one bit, but it's nowhere to be seen in the door cavity, yet it is a relatively big bit (bigger than an m10 bolt!).
So I'm thinking that it got "lost" when a window was replaced previously (two types of Butyl tape was in use, so I believe it's been opened before).

meh.. window goes up, window goes down. Snow stays out. Three boxes ticked :)

EdButler, cheers for those guides - it's exactly what I did, so I'm quite happy with that :D

everyone else, cheers for the ideas
