Window closure on locking - not!

Not sure if I have a problem but I cannot get the windows to close on our recently purchased 2014 e89.

It has the comfort pack installed and the manual indicates that the windows should lift if you keep the lock button pressed on the remote. It doesn't do that although the windows will open if you keep the unlock button pressed.

This is a pain in the neck, literally. The car is garaged but it's a tight fit leaving little room to get out. It's much easier with the drivers window down, but I expected to be able to get the window closed again by using the remote. Getting out with the drivers window up needs twisting and turning.

The only way I can get the window up again when it is down is to lock the car then double click the unlock, open and close the door and then lock it again. All the door switches work but they are disabled when the key is removed.

If it is a fault then I guess it's a trip to the dealer.

So you don't have comfort access? I.e. You don't need the key in the dash to start the car as comfort pack and comfort access are two different things and with the comfort access you can put the windows up and down with the key as well as the roof up and down with the key but if you don't have it you can put the windows down and the roof down with the key but that's it.

If you do have comfort access then you possibly need the key coded again

Comfort package
Package contains the following options:
– 544 Cruise control with brake function
– 563 Extended lighting
– 430 Interior and exterior mirrors, folding, auto-dimming
– 508 Park Distance Control (PDC), front and rear
– 493 Storage compartment package
– 387 Wind deflector

Comfort Access
For keyless access to driver and passenger doors and luggage compartment, also includes keyless starting of the engine and remote opening/closing of the Retractable Hard-top.

Yep. Comfort access (keyless go) is required for this. I think you're possibly mistaken rather than it being a fault.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Too many comfort options!

It's not comfort access, only the comfort pack. That's a big disappointment. I could close the top and windows on the series 1 ragtop we just sold but not a car costing more than half as much again. Brilliant car but annoying omission here. :-(

The E88 needed a similar option for that too, I had two E88s, a 135i and 120i and could only put the roofs down with the keyfob and had to use the key in the door to put them up. It's the same on the E89 if you want to use that option? Just remove the key and use the door lock.

Thanks for the heads up on the key option. Might just be easier.

Then if you really need this function, I'd suggest a SmartTop module. There are usually one or two in the for sale section if you fancy a little modification to the car.

The key windows up thing doesn't function on new cars or ones with the security update.

Looks like its either BMW trying to get more options when the car is spec'd or they'd been had a judgment against them somewhere because of injury.
It's an awful lot of faf to add another module. Easier to lock it, unlock it and open/close the door and then lock it again.
Don't suppose Comfort Access can be added by the dealer - I suspect I know the answer to this already…..

Had the same problem here. A good trick is to leave windows up and remove key from the ignition, click the unlock button on the fob twice then open the door, this should drop the window down (although not all the way, enough to make it easier getting out). When you close the door the window should then automatically go back up.

I have been using this method but recently purchased a Smarttop and can confirm this will allow windows to be closed using the fob.

Hope this helps.

Sean - Brilliant!
I hadn't thought of doing that sequence. I'll give it a go. It's as good as using the fob by the sounds of it.

I give it a double click to open the window when getting in while its in the garage too.

Much appreciated.

Have you got iDrive? If so, check the door lock settings - should be set to 'Comfort'

It is iDrive and is set on Comfort, but, does that make any difference if the car doesn't have comfort access?

Sean - that sequence works a treat. Good enough to get out in the garage and then lock it. Would love full remote closure but that's a nice to have. Thanks :D

oddly enough, I had to park in a tight spot today so had need for this. Sucess!
1. Removed key from ignition
2. Double press the unlock button
3. Open the door to get out, window goes down
4. Get out, close door
5. Window goes back up on its own. Perfect. :D

As a solution to the problem of getting out in a tight space, then this is a good one - no harder than using the fob to close the window. I'd still prefer the option of full closure with the fob though.
