Wind deflector

My first job when I get my new car is going to be installing a wind deflector, that box obviously wasn't ticked....

I have scoured the forum for old discussions and I know which parts to order, the two new front roll bar covers and the headrest inserts.
But what is the best option for the deflector?

Should I get the BMW deflector or maybe a perspex or tempered glass?
Is there any difference apart from how it looks...

So if you plan to drive at no more than say 30-40 mph roof dpwn and you like the look the glass/perspex is the way to go..

Over 40 mph then a mesh based one is the way to go

That's why every manufacturer's system uses mesh..and its a diffuser not a deflector in that case..

Why's that, is there more turbulence with a solid one?

Excuse my ignorance....
Yes, apparently so. I've got a mesh one and have done many 200+ mile motorway journeys with the roof down without issue.

In simple terms yes..lots more at higher speeds..plus a certain wind speeds probably very significant resonances..

Of course going roof down, and windows down is the extreme option. It gets very windy above 80mph even with the mesh deflector :-)

A solid 'deflector' will cause more turbulence and drag than a perforated one.

The air will hit the solid plate and cause boundary layer separation followed by flow separation and large vortices forming downstream of the plate. The mesh deflector, on the other hand, allows the air to pass through in a more ordered streamline fashion with much lower turbulence intensity.

I have a tempered glass deflector and it does buffet more as stated above. However the additional visibility I get, and a cleaner look to the car are worth it for me. Helps with reversing too. I can tell, at least with marked cars if I’m being tailed by the fuzz.

Right, I have got a used deflector off Fleabay, in V good nick actually £180.
I have also got the two new roll bar covers coming, £75 delivered.

The only thing i haven't got is the headrest inserts, can't find any used and I am not paying £250.
Will they be missed, that is the question?

There's a reason they exist, but no harm in trying out the deflector without them. You won't be first to not install the windschotts.

I thought the wind deflector came standard?

I did also. Perhaps the previous owner has kept it to sell on Ebay to sell to someone who has bought a car without one?

It's standard on the latest UK cars, was always standard in the US. But for older G29s it was a standalone option or part of the comfort pack.

I installed the new rollover covers and mesh deflectors yesterday on mine and had a test ride. The rollover inserts made no difference what so ever.
