Wind Deflector

Just wondering what everyone does with the wind deflector - do you leave it in place when driving with the roof up, or do you remove it until next time we get a dry day? If you take it off, where do you store it?

Mine has stayed in place for the last week, but driving in the dark, in rain, on the motorway this morning it occurred to me that it does limit visibility a little, so just curious as to what everyone else does!!
 
Mine is only ever fitted if I'm going on the motorway... the rest of the time it's in the boot! As you say it can be a pain in the dark and IMO the car looks a lot better without it.
 
Left mine in for the moment although I may try without with the roof up over the weekend.

I guess it could be a pain having to get out of the car to fit if you dropped the roof at a set of lights. Wonder if it makes that much difference with the roof down?
 
Yes, I thought it might be a pain too if you put the roof down on a whim - but as Pawn says it's only really needed on the motorway anyway... Shame it doesnt just fold back out of the way really...

If you leave it in the boot, is it fairly robust? I tend to sling my gym bag in without too much care, so would hate to damage it.
 
I always leave mine in place as well. I do not really feel that it limits visability. That said I would prefer a clear 'plastic' or glass one as available for the SLK. Maybe I will put it on my to-do list. I know others have done this on the forum.
 
Tend to leave it in all year until the hardtop goes on then store in the boot clips.

Makes a big difference under certain speeds and conditions by reducing turbulence

You'll find a clear one is perhaps better looking, but actually defeats the object of the mesh. BMW very carefully designed it to slow the wind speed down. With rigid perspex it will cause the air to roll over the screen and create turbulence inside the cabin.

Real difficult I'm sure to see or judge when just driving along as conditions vary so much.
 
It does seem that the mesh Wind Deflector does cause the Auto dimming mirror to not auto dim, but still checking this out as I have only had my Z4 for 22 hours

You have got the clips on the underside of the boot lid havent you? and we are talking the rigid version here, not the nasty strap-on?!! :o
 
remember this is in the new zed forum...

old zeds have a compartment on the roof lining of the boot to store it away, not sure abut new zeds coz i havent seen the size and shape, but I'd think you could store it away somewhere.
 
There's is a bag in the boot and some straps on the floor that can hold it!!


Hang on, that's sounds even more like a bondage vid!! :P
 
Interesting you say there is a bag in the boot - when I got mine I asked the dealer where the bag was and he said it was only the old one that had a bag. I do have the straps on the floor though.

Well I had a loose bag in the boot and wondered what it was for. It fits the deflector perfectly, although I leave mine in place.
 
I have a bag in the boot too - but on first inspection it looked way too narrow for the wind deflector. I also have straps on the floor, wondered what they were for!! WInd deflector is currently off and stashed behind the passenger seat!!
 
PS, straps on the underside of the boot lid would be so much more sensible so it doesnt get damaged with stuff thrown on top of it. And note my valiant attempt to get this back out of pornland :)

LOL - duly noted Vicar!

But seriously, if you have the rigid deflector thats got the rollbar fittings and the permanent hoop inserts, it should have been installed with two clips on the underside of the boot lid that are identical to the ones on the hoops, to hold it in place?
