Wind Deflector

Hi

I am thinking of getting a wind deflector for my Z4, used to have one on my M3 Conv and that made a real difference.

I like the idea of BMW standard fit one, believe it's the honeycombe version.

Does this have to fitted my BMW and does anyone know what I should look to pay for ir, or any other alternatives?

Thanks
Pete

There's two versions afaik. A fabric one that just kinda hooks over the rear roll bars and a fixed plastic one with a mesh in the middle.

The fabric ones pretty straightforward to fit, just with hooks. Whereas the plastic one requires a bit of modification to the tops of the roll bars.

I bought and fitted mine myself, not as difficult to do as it seems. The only difficult part was removing the roll hoop covers and fitting the new ones. Paid £227 for all the bits. BMW wanted £120 to fit it, i politely declined their offer :)

I've got the fabric one and it's a bit of a PITA to fit in a hurry which means I leave it on most of the time (inc. when the roof is up) which obscures the view out of the rear window, especially when the roof is up. I would recommend going for the other option but it is quite a bit more expensive. It does work quite well though.

mine came with the fabric one and Ive never had the inclination to remove (apart for cleaning) it even though it doesn't look terribly nice. Not found an issue with rear visibility though - probably because it has always been there...

Mine came with the plastic one fitted.

It works well and is very easy to remove and put back in place.

I bought the deflector of E-Bay. Then went to dealers and bought the brackets etc for the roll bar covers. I also bought the new roll bar covers with the holes drilled in them, I asked the dealer if I didn't need them could I bring them back, and he said I could.
I took all the stuff home and using masking tape I made a template from the new covers. I transfered the template for the holes onto my existing covers (still on the car) drilled the holes through the covers and fitted the brackets with the screws provided.
Hey presto, fitted first time.
I then took the roll bar covers back and got a refund of £80 odd quid.
This is o.k if you only want to fit the middle wind deflector. If you want to fit the ones in the headrests then you WILL have to buy the new covers, as you WILL break the old ones taking them off.
Who says you can't beat the BMW Dealer?

Just bear in mind BMW say these wind deflectors are not compatible with leather clad roll hoop covers. they do not make a replacement hoop cover with the holes or cut outs for the inner part of the deflector. The replacement covers in the leather of your car are about 200 quid a piece and I mean each half of each hoop ie around £800 total !
I took mine off, broke the clips as your expected too, modified for the deflector and then clipped back together with the remaining clips and araldite plus G clamps for 24 hours. A right palava but you would never know if you go easy with the adhesive and conceal the glue seam.

I do like the Roadster Solutions product. You can install it yourself, it works well, it looks good, it's reasonably priced and well made and if the car if leased, you can remove it and all traces of it having been there.

Mine came with the plastic mesh one, I leave it fitted permanently - dunno if it makes any difference!

My local dealer (Bowkers in Preston) supplied and fitted the honeycomb version for £250 - a great deal. The deflector does make a noticable improvement in buffeting but perhaps not as much as you might expect. I'd say get one, if you can get it for the price I paid.

Same, I just leave it on as you get used to reduced vis. Also provides for spontaneous roof opening...

What do you mean spontaneous roof opening? And does any one know if you can open the roof while the car is moving and if you can....how fast?

car has to be stationary when the roof opening starts... once in motion you can move off but only slowly and have to keep your finger on the button.

Think by spontaneous he means if the sun pops out after some rain...

I just installed windscreen from roadster solutions. Good price and works great. Takes 10 minutes to install and easy to remove.
