Wind deflector essential? Different versions? Which is best?

Hi looking to buy a Z4 probably 2003-2005 model. It will be my everyday car.

Is a wind deflector something I should be looking to buy?

There seem to different fabric and perspex versions, which is best?

What should I expect to pay 2nd hand?

Thanks in advance:)

Hi and welcome to te Forum - I see frm your other post you are looking to buy a Zed and need some clarification with regard the accessories etc. I have to say that the BMW fitted original wind deflector is rge best in my pinion but as an aftermarket accesory is expensive. It fits by clipping it into two guide rails attached to the roll over bars on each side and can be stored on clips in the boot lid when not in use. There are others that are fabric and slip over the roll bars.

Use the search facility (top right) and this will give you lots of the info you are looking for including upgrading to a multi function steering wheel etc.

Good luck in your search for a Zed. In my signature (below) is a link to a pre owned check list which you may find useful during your search.

Welcome!

I added the 'honeycomb' wind deflector to mine as it only came with the mesh 'strap on' one - parts were about £240 if i recall correctly. It was easy to fit.

Thanks

DrNick is the £240 one the official one? Was that bought from BMW? What is it made of?

Sounds like it yes.
Not as effective as i thought it would be, still get some buffeting. But like it for the extra protection and privacy.

A Z4 is the wrong car if you want privacy.

As above though it's not perfect but ever take mine out so now it's fitted so can't really compare.

yes and yes - its a retro fit of the original factory fitted one, its made of a honeycomb fabric mesh type thing, clips in and out and stores in clips on the boot lid

MrDo have you tried a wind deflector before? My car came with the BMW Black leather wind deflector (slips over rollbars) but i took it off after a week.

I'm not sure why people buy convertibles, but for me i love the feeling of the top down and wind in my hair, I find the wind deflector to lower vision and not make a difference till i was going highway speed anyways.

Not worth using for me as I live in the city and find it more of a hassle then a help (might use it on long 300km+ drives tho)

I'd say if you or your other half have long hair it's a must. I had the over the roll bar one and it was particularly good for long journeys. So if you ever plan to do long roofless motorway stints I'd get one. If you can find a z with the factory fit deflector It's a much nicer solution, if not then keep an eye out for the oem after market one like I'm selling on the buy and sell forum once you have your car. Don't make it a deal breaker tho as easy to get the after market one.

Welcome to the z4-Forum

I only use mine on long highway trips. I also never have it in place (the factory one) unless I do go on a long highway trip it is simply better visibility out back.

I recommend you purchase your car, then perhaps find a used factory one. A lot of people changed the factory one to the fancy glass one. So I bet there are quite a few used ones out there for sale, I might be wrong, still it's worth a try.

I see you still have not sold your car  Is your price too high? If the steering wheel would be on the left hand side I would take it for my European driver :)

It is great if u have a mrs in the passenger seat! U should get the oem mesh- either the removable one or the over the hoops one which I have.

I'm guessing from your posts that this (see link to perspex WD) might be the best option as it does not reduce visibility?

As the Z4 will be our only car so I want it to be flexible... as much as a two seater can be

Your advice appreciated :)

I have the mesh one with the leather that fits over the roll bars. It does cut down on buffeting and I think it looks kind of cool too. I bought mine on ebay for about 20% of what they cost new.

Because when it's sub-zero temps, every little helps when it comes to reducing the buffeting. No that sub-zero temps are something you need to worry about :poke:

I agree they're not massively effective but IMO it does help a little.
