wimpy bumper

I just witnessed a kindly old man back his car into the front corner of my car. The bumper makes a sharp 'crack' noise as it breaks, if you have never heard it before. Whatever happened to '5-mph' bumpers?! :headbang:

I'm really not in the mood to deal with body shops and gathering estimates at this time of the year. :x

No consolation but actually in deforming then breaking, the bumper probably did its job properly and saved the more expensive inners of the Z.
5 mph is actually fairly quick and a lot of energy to dissipate.

Hit square on the foam block might have taken the blow but no boubt the bumper would be damaged anyway

Just one example of a 5mph impact:

A few months ago the same thing happened to may car, someone backing out of a driveway decided to back out extra far and into my coupes front driver headlight corner area. It was less than 5 mph as he was just backing out, he apparently couldn't hear the cracking sound, but I could as i was walking my dog down the street. And low and behold, the bumper did crack near the washer nozzle area, the driver headlight bracket also cracked, and the passenger headlight was knocked loose... about 2K with the headlights and bumper and accessories... I've left is as is until the winter subsides, but the headlights still work fine, just looks like my coupe has a crooked eye...

I am glad the bumper cracked because if it hadn't that force would have bent some steel...

Now his bumper, on a Toyota Camry, that was wimpy and completely dented in, thats what you get for hitting a rock...

Update:
Not only is the bumper cracked, but it looks like a headlight bracket may be broken. Unfortunately, nobody can tell unless they 'open up the car'. Essentially, it could be as bad as $2500. Merry Xmas indeed!!! :o

P.S. It could be worse. I saw this while at the beach today:
