Will a post-facelift bonnet and FR fender fit on a pre-facelift E85?

Hi,

I'm replacing some bodywork panels, among which are the front-right fender and the bonnet. I'm going for a used parts, because of the price and because then i'm sure it'll fit. To enlarge my choice, and because it isn't always visible whether the parts originate from a pre- or post facelift car, i'd like to find out whether post-facelift parts will fit on my car. My car is a sterling gray E85 from september '04. There's lots of post describing the differences between pre- and postfacelift, and the bumpers are one of the often mentioned differences. Since the front bumper borders the bonnet and fender, i'm not sure whether the post-facelift bonnet and fender have remained unchanged, and are backwards compatible. Can anyone tell me so?

By the way, if you do happen to have one of these parts lying around and you're willing to sell, i'm surely interested and you can PM me!

There’s a guy breaking a Z4 on here, there’s a post in the buy and sell cars section. May well have the parts you need, he’s in Bristol by the way :)

The post-facelift bonnets have two catches, one each side. Pre-facelift have one central catch.
Can the catches really be easily modified/relocated?

I didn't know that :? . Is Realoem wrong then?

The early car has a central catch and the post face-lift definitely has two, L and R so one is not going to drop straight on to the other with the fittings attached. But both bonnet panels are the same part number, so it would be worth investigating whether BMW simply screwed/bolted the later catches on the same bonnet, if so it might be a simple mod' involving different holes.

I've fitted a M bonnet to my Zed previously, and that is a facelift. No issues.

I had to swap all my hardware over as it came bare, I've heard about the 2-pins before, I can only assume that facelift bonnets came with the fitting points for either a single central one, or two slightly separated catches. Having never seen the two catches option, I can't confirm this. This multi-fitment may also be unique to the M bonnet.

My conclusion, is that is should be possible to swap, but I don't guarantee it!

Thanks for the help guys! It seems the catches are indeed the only difference regarding fitment. I'll try to find out whether they are compatible with each other, and if I end up with a post-facelift bonnet i'll post the answer. Seems that a lot of pre-facelift bonnets are actually available though, so I think i'll find a suitable one.
