Will $4/gallon+ (US) influence your driving

I was thinking about the Homecoming Event coming up in late August and speculating on what fuel prices might be at the time of the trip. For me it is 900 miles one way door-to-door. Add in a Tail of the Dragon run or two and you'll understand this is a drive well over 2000 miles, all done in 5-7 days. With fuel prices going up the momemt crude futures rise (funny how prices get inflated before the oil is even sucked out of the ground) who knows what the pump price will be. $4/gallon plus shouldn't be a shocker to anyone.

So my question is: will even higher fuel prices curtail longer trips and/or reduce shorter trips? Has it already? What about our West Coast friends, will you drive to HC if prices are at $4/gallon or higher?

Interested to know what peeps are thinking now that summer driving season is just about here.

Cheers,
Greg

$4 a gallon !!!

In the UK £1.05 per litre, there are 4.5lts to a gallon = £4.78 a gallon converted at todays rates = $9.69 :poke:

I would drive for miles and miles at your rates :driving:

Nope, my car is my daily driver. So my driving pattern will not change. It's rare that I go on road trips because I've been busy around the house and work. When we do go on a road trip it's a "special" occassion so we just do it no matter the cost of fuel.

You'll think about the price for a day - perhaps, moan about it and then get on with life.

As RustyZ4 points out we have the $10 gal and it makes no odds. At $20 our roads will still be full

I am on a fixed income so all discretionary driving has come to a halt. I even plan trips so that I can accomplish multiple tasks not just run to the store and back. :x :x

I realize that many persons especially in this country think it is their God given right to drive their car :driving: by themselves :driving: each day to work and other places. I used to have employees, where the husband and wife both worked in my office and both drove themselves to work, because they did not want to be dependent on someone else’s schedule. :o Not only was fuel wasted, but an extra parking place was used as well. I put a stop to it by determining that only one parking space per family would be given. When they had to pay for monthly parking it stopped. :headbang:

Anyway…..

What would happen if all governments said on July 1, 2008 it will be illegal to sell a gallon of fuel in any country for more than $3.00 or equivalent exchange. Just have the UN declare that it is a scarce world commodity and the price is fixing from now on. There is an OPEC  that is apparently setting the price of a barrel of oil, why not a UN-OPEC :) that sets the price you can pay. Fuel suppliers would have to figure how to make a reasonable profit within those parameters. As it is now the tail is wagging the dog. We got to turn this around. :headbang:

Ok, this is of course simplistic, but think of why it would not work. Maybe we do not have the ability to fix things like this anymore. :fuelfire:

Yep... unfortunately gas is a relatively inelastic demand.

Been paying U.S. $4.50 for premium for while now - $4.00 may encourage more driving fun - or STUNT Driving as its called here in Ontario :driving:

I will still be driving and hopefully attending Homecoming, besides there are plenty of cars in the parking lots!!!

It's not quite that bad. There are 4.5 liters in one of those big Imperial gallons. We use those little measly US gallons at ~3.8l/gal

a guy at work was bitching about how much gas is going to cost and how it's going to affect his life. He got mad when i started laughing. We'd previously discussed our cars and mileage of which I reminded him. My car gets about 7K miles per year as all I do is commute 18 miles a day. His commute is 4 miles round trip, but he rides his bike every sunny day. His annual mileage is something like 2K miles. He bought his bicycle to save on gas. His bike is worth 650 gallons of premium (roughly) as it is a very nice all terrain bike with suspension. That works out to about 3 years of driving at today's rate. But of course, we need to factor in the orthopedic surgery to fix his shoulder after he crashed his bike, and the roughly $1K he put into the bike to fix it.

The gas prices won't affect how I drive, but I might make my wife find a job closer to home!

Hey Canadians,

How much is it for a litre over there these days? I haven't crossed the border in almost 4 years.

$4.00 / gallon probably won't infuence my driving too much. I still need to get to work every day. Even the majority of my weekend driving is "non-discretionary". We are planning a driving vacation with the family this summer and even at $4.00 / gallon it will still be cheaper than 5 airline tickets. We have turned the heat down in the house quite a bit this winter though.

Since the Z4 is the highest mileage vehicle we own (a bit better then our Forester and a lot better than our 4Runner) all expensive gas means is that I'm more motivated to drive the Z.

It's $1.09 or so for regular. Filled up Supreme last week for $1.21 :D

OUCH! The last time I bought gas in Canada it was .48 per litre. I remember because I thought it was SOOOO expensive!
