I’ve got a drop in Internet speed when in my man cave which is a distance away from the router - is it worth buying one of these range extender / booster gismos or are they just smoke and mirrors?

I've got the BT version and it makes a huge difference. Can stream HD TV with no issues, or picture loss in a room where it wasn't previously possible without blurred picture and buffering.

I have used a whole house extender system to good effect in 2 of my sons homes the make I used was tenda mw3

Yes and no...

Next to the router I get 16.7Mbps - the maximum the line will support. If I go to the back of the house in another room I’m only getting 10
It’s the same when I use my I my iMac in the man cave upstairs.

Can you tell me the model number/ price / where you bought it etc please?

The wifi extenders are a wonder of modern home working. I was having to work in the dining room, plugged into the router until our daughter fitted one in my study. Now up here with the view of the moors and able to do some real work. (When not chatting to you lot)

I'm actually in a skype meeting right now Ronk Any Engineering Change Proposal experts out there.

I tried crawling under the desk, no joy. I'll pull mine out of the wall later and post the details up. :)

Much appreciated

We have the BT system and utilise 3 of their extenders in a 5 bed bungalow. Took some setting up to find the optimum position but cannot fault them and wouldn't be without them.

got a pair of these in our house and it gives full coverage in any room as well as the garden

I wouldn't bother with any solution other than a powerline kit, provided your further way room is on the same ring

What router do you have?

Whichever you choose make sure it is a mesh system - various brands do a good job with varying degrees of help to position the units for best effect. I have a TPLink Deco M4 system with 3 units (£100 from Amazon) which gives good coverage throughout a 4 bed home including a detached garage some way from the house where I could never get a signal before I installed it. A definite and worthwhile improvement IMHO. The Tenda system recommended by Jabber should be similar. If you're more inclined to pay more for the best around then Netgear Orbi systems tend to come out on top in group tests. Range extenders based on older technology (non-mesh) are more of a minefield. Many are ineffective and some even reduce throughput speeds.

I would say the drop from 16.7 to 10 is fairly negligible.Even if you manage to get to 14 would you notice the difference. The problem is the source. I know, you should move house! There, sorted that one for you. :poke:

This is the one I have here.

No idea what the speed is or what speed it is down stairs, plugged in via cable for that matter.

What I do know is, without it I can't work up here and with it I can. The rest is detail and bragging rights.

About fifteen years ago I ran Ethernet cable from the router in the study (loft) to sockets in four of our 'rooms' - kids bedrooms; lounge and hall. Since then the world has changed and its a long way from the loft in a 1930's brick built house and out BT router. Bedrooms are OK and one of these in the hall does all the downstairs rooms - it is pluged into the Ethernet socket though.

Absolute god send, working from home, no dropping out. 4K HD streaming on Netflix and amazom etc.

bt wifi extender 300

Oh and only £ 20.-- no brainer.

Its a Plusnet Hub One - Made by Sagemcom, it looks like the BT version - However since my last post, my ISP has delivered new replacement router (If thats what they are still called) and the problem is now much improved - sometimes showing identical speeds an sometimes only dropping by 3Mbps ie 16.7 down to 13.7 ish - Im starting to think it could be the original equipment that was failing?

Yeah, maybe. But in real life performance the difference between 10 and 16 is not much. Is that the best you have where you live? Seems pretty slow these days.
