They arent massively quick for the engine size, but they are very torquey and the power is very usuable..
One of the quickest point to point cars i have ever had was a VR6 Golf..That was after having Impreza's and an M3 beforehand...
Im not a huge fan of Veedubs anymore, and the R32 has a raft of expensive problems but i dont think that a Mk6 R32 is a decent package for the money.
Audi. Had a 1.9 A4 Avant TDI in 2005 and although it was quite good its a crap drive and had lots of problems and spent a lot of time in the garage for a year. Got to drive most iof the Audi fleet the,n A3/A6/A8 and all were hnot great. Conclusion Audi = Skoda for badge snobs.
You have a point. I have owned or driven pretty much every VAG product in the last 10 yrs and am too very dessapointed with the way they've gone.
Here the list:
Golf HIstory.
Mk2 Golf GTI Cabriolet Karmann - Mum's car, still has it and I drive it regularly. Great great car.Bombproof.
MK4 1.6 petrol. My first car? Drove it to death and loved it dearly. A porky and not great handling but still a lovely car.
MK5 2 L TDI. Better chassis but horrible car in every other way. Did 3 rolls in it (pics are somewhere on this forum) and no bloody airbag went off.
MK6 2L TDI. Better finished and vastly more refined than MK5 and better looking. A real fatty though and slow.
MK7 1.6 TDI. Just taken delivery of this obne and have been hooning it for 2 Months now. Its a 3dr DSG. Great gear box, very good looking. But they have reverted to the crappy rear suspension from the MK4 which is rubbish. I can actually unsettle it hard on the breaks. Its too wide, full of marketing useless gadgets. I think a 140b hp TSI DSG 1.4L with sports spec would be a very good daily driver (rear suspension is different on those).
every BMW I rent abraod (about 25 per year) is more or less good to very good to exellent. Can't say the same about VAG stuff.
