Im not a huge fan of Veedubs anymore, and the R32 has a raft of expensive problems but i dont think that a Mk6 R32 is a decent package for the money.

I thought last R32 was MK5?

Always thought these were way too slow for the engine size. A 3.2l in a golf should fly but it was hardly any quicker than the 2.0l turbo in the GTi.

Droce a mk4 R32,, and does go like the clappers. Don't underestimate it because it only has 250 odd bhp, its a seriously quickcar. Very comfy too and absolutely loved the looks and I still lust afer a 3 door silver or blue one.

only comments the 4WD is utter bollù%°s. That rear Haldex diff is crap. Its suppodely much better on a mk5 Golf R32 as is the rest ofthe car.

They arent massively quick for the engine size, but they are very torquey and the power is very usuable..

One of the quickest point to point cars i have ever had was a VR6 Golf..That was after having Impreza's and an M3 beforehand...

Audi. Had a 1.9 A4 Avant TDI in 2005 and although it was quite good its a crap drive and had lots of problems and spent a lot of time in the garage for a year. Got to drive most iof the Audi fleet the,n A3/A6/A8 and all were hnot great. Conclusion Audi = Skoda for badge snobs.

You have a point. I have owned or driven pretty much every VAG product in the last 10 yrs and am too very dessapointed with the way they've gone.

Here the list:

Golf HIstory.

Mk2 Golf GTI Cabriolet Karmann - Mum's car, still has it and I drive it regularly. Great great car.Bombproof.

MK4 1.6 petrol. My first car? Drove it to death and loved it dearly. A porky and not great handling but still a lovely car.

MK5 2 L TDI. Better chassis but horrible car in every other way. Did 3 rolls in it (pics are somewhere on this forum) and no bloody airbag went off.

MK6 2L TDI. Better finished and vastly more refined than MK5 and better looking. A real fatty though and slow.

MK7 1.6 TDI. Just taken delivery of this obne and have been hooning it for 2 Months now. Its a 3dr DSG. Great gear box, very good looking. But they have reverted to the crappy rear suspension from the MK4 which is rubbish. I can actually unsettle it hard on the breaks. Its too wide, full of marketing useless gadgets. I think a 140b hp TSI DSG 1.4L with sports spec would be a very good daily driver (rear suspension is different on those).

every BMW I rent abraod (about 25 per year) is more or less good to very good to exellent. Can't say the same about VAG stuff.

Correct. the MK6 is a 2.0 tfsi at about 270ps. Forced induction also means it gets much quicker with relative ease.

Audi TT s line facelift 2010 60 regplate onwards?

Tdi in Quattro with economy and torque.

hmmm, she does want a Golf, so a GTI is starting to sound like a better option.

We wouldn't go for a TT simply since we need at least one sensible car that you can get 4 people in.

thanks for all of the input. - very, very useful (as always) :)

The GTi in both the Mk5 and the Mk6 is a better car if you ask me. it has way more tuning potential and as such can be brought up to R32 performance with very very little work/cost.

DSG box, don't know where everyone gets this paranoia about them. i've had a DSG equipped Audi A3 and it was a fantastic gearbox. 3 years on the Audi forum I've not seen a single post from anyone saying they have had a major issue with a DSG or Stronic box. I dare say there have been some but same goes for manuals. I actually have a friend who has a Mk5 with 120k on it and the DSG box has never had a single problem. I would say that in either car the DSG box is an essential.

Tell me more about the karmann cabriolet. I'm viewing one this afternoon as my next weekender/project. I've never even driven one but just really fancy one. I'm worried it feels heavy and is really slow as they are only about 110bhp aren't they?

Really? Just google DSG/mechatronic failure.

DSG cars sold in the US and China get a 10 year warranty on the gearbox. If it was bullet proof then i doubt they would be doing this.

Been on the TT Forum for years and this issue has been logged since the first DSG were released in 2004.

I went shopping for a new R32 and got talked into buying an Edition 30 instead. It was their dealer principles demo car, had every toy on it and more to the point was remapped to 307bhp. Infinitely more flexible, economical and fun. I got it few months old for the cost of the new R32 and never regretted it

Just look on YouTube for what a remapped one is capable of, there are plenty about.

As Stuart put .I have had two r32 and this car should have had a turbo fitted from factory to make it a special car .I had the first edition but have to say apart from being a little
under power it was a good solid car and the exhaust note sounds lovely. My friend as a edition 30 and have to say if your not doing many motor way miles the edition 30 is the better car more mpg and quicker of the mark .But each to there own its still a nice car and if its like my house what the wife wants she gets

Its a french car living in the UK. It rides beautifully, it lfexes a little but seems to "breath with the road". does not feel slow by any means. the engine just begs to be driven properly, it feels lively and you like you are working the engine and the throttle. There is no power steering so its smooth carving and feelsome at speed. I think its a far more coplmpetent car than one would think and with the roof and windows down, a great entertainer. Would only drive it a t 8/10th though? its not a full sports car and all the better for it. Ergoonomics are OK for that era (I'm 6.4"). Go try one.
