why the z and not one of its rivals

After being without a convertible sports car for nearly five years I wanted something, but knowing it would sit on the drive most of the time and only do a few thousand miles a year the missus would only let me spend about £5,000. It did limit my options a lot. Ideally i wanted to go back to a 987 but a decent one of them would have cost twice that and getting back into an 987 RS60 like I had from new till 2011 would be £20k or so.

I did try a few things like the mx5 (too cramped not enough go), the S2000 (too cramped breathless unless nailing it). I also ruled out the TT 225 as I had one as a company car from 2003-2006 and its not a sport cars just a golf in drag, great for motorways not back roads! Tried an SLK 350 which was more than my budget, but I would of stretched to it but found it not very sporty at all and rare as hens teeth with a big engine and a manual. At one dealer i did manage to try a E85 against the 987 in the showroom and was pleasantly surprised to find the zed more spacious inside and actually felt a more modern design. At the same dealer I was able to try a second E85 with m sports seats and definitely decided I needed these.

That left me with a bit of a dilemma as I only wanted to spend £5k ish but a decent 3.0si (sport seats) was a good couple of grand of so more. Plus I liked the idea of the bullet proof M54 engine in the pre face lifts as I was familiar with this engine as my wife used to have a 330ci M sport Cab with this engine in. The potential issues with the N52 worried me, especially after having an X5 4.8is with the N62 engine in that was very problematic in the engine department. I know its a different engine but there's a lot of similarities with N52. In the end I decided to save a couple of grand and opted for an 05 3.0i SE bought privately for a good price and after a week bought a set of heated/electric black leather sports seats, with these and non runflat tyres, retrofit cruise and a few other bits including wrapping the interior silver bits in 3M Carbon fibre it owes me about £5,000.

I've had it since July and have now done about 1,000 miles in it and can honestly say I do wish it had a bit more go but that aside I'm probably getting 85% of the enjoyment out of it I got from my old RS60. I put a quaiffe in that and it made a huge difference and hope to do the same with my zed in the summer (quaiffe or m factory) and hopefully that will make a similarly big difference. OK its never going to handle quite as good as the Porsche or be quite as fast but for the money I really cant complain!

Well that's an easy one to answer. It's better looking, quicker requires someone to actually drive it quickly and most importantly it's more fun, that any thing else out there for the same sort of dosh. :D

For me I just felt it was the all round best package for my needs the looks do help a lot though.

I never liked the older boxsters no matter how good they are to drive I just felt they looked so dull. Cayman was out of my price range when I got my first Z4 so that was out. Audi TT I thought were nice cars but just not my cup of tea. SLK again they just did not excite me.

Similar story when I purchased my E89 last year the new boxsters that I think look lovely and are truly stunning cars were to expensive so was the new Cayman that are equally as stunning. I did look at Z4M though but a mixture of not being able to find a car that ticked my boxes and the potential high running costs I went with the E89 I always liked them then when I saw and drove the one I bought there was no alternative for me. I adore the car just feels very special.

Do wonder what I'd go for next if it's not a BMW I do like the new 4 and 6 series a lot though. Would love to scratch my Lotus itch but that would have to be a second car for me. F Type one of the newer Boxsters or Caymen's if the numbers stack up its a few years off before I need to figure it out thankfully.

After 6 MR2's I needed a change, tried an MX5 which was great but felt too much like a toy car and the toyota's, plus both needed a lot of revs as neither had much torque, plus I wanted something a bit more 'grown up'. The S2000 is a great looking car but I did'nt like having to rev the nuts off it, again not much low down. Had a high mile boxster 3.2s which was fantastic but started to cost so it had to go. Stumbled upon a 2.0 zed at a dealer, took it out, went home, found a 3 litre E85 from cabrio coupe that same day and bought it a week later. The zed ticked pretty much all the boxes, looks great, utterly fantastic 3.0 si engine, I'd still have it now if it had'nt been written off.

Then had an M roady, and now an E89. Although the E89 just nicks it I'd happily have anyone of them again, great cars, flawed a bit in handling compared to a Boxster or MX5 in stock form but still all round great fun cars.

Was looking at a 996 then a Boxster but their well documented issues scared me off. I had a TT Roadster for five years and I not into Jap cars, which left the only possible Roadster that I like, enter Z4 with that straight Six

I liked sitting in it and it also comes with 338 horses. A horse costs around £20k so I though I was getting a bit of a bargain.

I also like the 350z, I have tracked one but it was a very heavy handful and leaned all over the place, my friend tracks the S2000 which is good but the BMW just feels more solid... and has power and torque :)

Having decided on approximate budget the choice was:

Boxster S - dismissed on the basis that it wasn't sufficiently clear which was the front! :poke:

SLK 350 (or even the AMG 5.0L) - the folding hard roof was a big plus but the innate girliness was too much of a minus.

Took the Z4MR for a test drive and had mentally bought it after 500 yards - plus points: best looking of the 3 and wow performance. :)

my heart was set on a jag xkr, so much so i nearly drove away in one, but i was scared of the horrific bills when they do go wrong...
so looked at a new xk, someone told me to stay clear of them too.
next was a 911, stunning car, but i felt like a nob, like a footy player nob, so couldnt do with that stigma
and then sot mentioned a z4m....and as the story goes..:) best of every world

True. I occasionally see women driving Z4s, but its almost a 50/50 chance of a woman driver if its an SLK. Don't know why that is exactly, but the Z4 seems to be more masculine.

Why the Z4?

History of cars: (Remember I'm in America)

1st car : Plymouth FuryIII 1965 model Dad let me drive it around, while learning. 302HP 2d, ugly ass yellow. (was not officaly mine till 1978) Had some power, rear wheel drive.

2nd car: 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 4 door. Had a 351 Windsor, as that power was needed to push that "Lead Sled" around the roads. My 1st introduction to power sliding in the winters to get to work. While most got stuck in the snow on the tight corners to get out of the subdivision, with steep hills and such, I slide the whole way out. Fun Plus plus. Also, It didnt make pot holes, It smoothed them out.

3rd car : Dodge Charger 1972 Fast Slap stick, 2 door Hardtop with a 400 HP engine. Made it from Kansas City to Tulsa OK in 3.5 hours at speeds of 90(144KM) constant and often times 110 (177km). Trip normally at the proposed posted road speeds of 55MPH took up to 7 hours. (I was horny and she moved away, still married to her) :)

4th Car: 1969 Ford Mustang. Inline 6 banger manual 4 speed. Back in the day that 6 banger had s**t all for power. It was grabbed out of a junk yard for 600 bucks. I had the frame, drive train, brakes and suspension all fixed, and one day while I was a work the wife sold it to a salvage yard. (she claimed it was unsightly in the driveway, new house, corner lot, and all)They immediately crushed it on arrival for scrap. thousands tossed in the scrap bin as I only had the interior and a new motor and tranny to drop in. 302 was being rebuilt with a C4 manual 4speed to match. Sold to neighbor as I didnt have a car to drop them in.

5th car: 1972 Mercury Cougar White 351 Windsor 4 barrel with factory air. Got it for a steal and it was still in clean and cherry shape. Drove it for 9 years and racked the clock up to 550K miles. Regular oil changes, spirited driving the whole time. Changed the timing chain out 2 times. Parked it and sold to a kid that loved it more than I at the time.

6th Ford Probe. Had a Mazda v6 3.0 L (182 cu in) and 6 speed manual. Mother fugger would get up and go if you were serious about pushing it. (1st introduction to an over seas engine.) Racked up 850K miles with 3 timing belts and regular oil changes and assorted maintenance.

7th and 8th: nothing to be happy over, Sedans with 4 doors while the kids grew and transport.

So yea, now their gone, not that I don't miss them and all. Time for Dad to get road happy again.

Looked at the Boxter, drove one, but it didn't fit like the Z4 did.

Kap'n Z4

Some impressive mileages there - I wonder why we over here are so obsessed by low mileage as being a major factor in second hand car buying?

I think after the Mustang Incident I would have definitely divorced her!

Had the SLK R170 but it wasn't the sports car I wanted to. Then got a mini cooper s 200bhp, but I missed the convertible and to be honest I prefer the 2 seated.

So... the SLK R171 too classic car for "older" people for me, my best friend has the TT convertible... so... Z4 it was. Plus I really liked the shape

I was looking for something to replace my TVR and I had always wanted a Z4M and I really loved the Coupe's shape too, I had never had a convertible though so I thought I would try the Z4MR...I should have gone with the Coupe with hindsight but you don't know until you try something.

I knew the S54 engine was well regarded and I liked the manual gearbox and RWD/LSD combo and I had enjoyed that set up in my 200SX/Cerbera, so the Z4M was an obvious choice for me in many ways.

I traded my 2003 Boxster S on the 2007 Z4 3.0i roadster. I drove the Porsche for five months, and have only had two months with the Z4 before putting it away for the winter, so it is still too early to make a fair comparison between the two. I had been looking for an S2000 but was just a bit too late on two very nice examples. When I found the Z4, I decided that it would be nice to have some power without the need to go to 8000 RPM to get it. I am sure that the Honda would be fun to drive, but not with wife aboard at normal day to day cruising speeds. (Her presence works like having a governor on the throttle).

For the following reasons:
1. Among the Bangle approved/influenced designs, the Z ages the best and still looks great so many years on
2. Price is within my budget compared to its closest rivals
3. M54 engine :)
4. Spare parts aplenty and car is still readily DIYable with lots of tips, guides out there

I can relate to that and I really didn't like the fact that my M3 revved to 8400rpm because it suffered from a similar problem to the Honda in that nothing happened until 6000rpm, so every time you tried to enjoy the performance(the handbrake(mrs) knew you were trying! :D

I just wish someone would manufacture an engine that revs high but still has some performance lower down as well...sadly it seems an impossible task though :(

i was at autotech performance in telford while my house was up for sale, I owned a E36 328i sport at the time and peter was doing some work on it. out side the front he had both the z roadster and coupe in for work. I looked at both and originally wanted the roadster, but after speaking with peter and having a quick look around it I then decided on the coupe. for me it looked more modern than the boxter and s2000 while having that "rare" appeal.
