Long but interesting review that will either justify your purchase or persuade you to go ahead - definitely the former for me

Been a long time but I watched this one again now.
Re the GT4 comparisons, I did drive the Porsche 817 GTS when it came out and realized my Z4MC was a MUCH better car with super-linear & analogue reactions, compared to the Porsche. And the engine note was indeed horrible. Fast, sure.
I may even have been half-fed-up with my Z4 entering that dealer, but came out a happy man!

I drove the 718 models on road and track and would agree about the engine sound and zero steering feedback. The 'feedback' they actively introduce isn't the right way to go about it imho either.

The 718S is a step on from the Z4M in terms of performance though. Finally you have the torque to load up that chassis, in a way that even a (slower) GT4 cannot manage. The front end grip is fantastic too.

I guess their marketing department dinged fitting a sound composer to make it sound better. Oh well!

This is what it all boils down to now? Manufacturing sounds? What about the feel, smell, throb of an inline 6cyl naturally aspirated pot up front (or behind)... One weeps for the future  :headbang:

Will keep this one even if the road tax hits a grand or more, dammit! :driving:

Well said, good man. :driving:  :D

I don't have the benefit of comparison and went for the Z4MC on looks alone having driven nothing even like that previously and to be honest having spoke with others and looked at numerous reviews I'm struggling to think of anything that would come close for the same purchase cost.

I noticed the reviews all have a similar theme - they start with "it's ages since I drove one of these" or "I've really been looking forward to driving one of these" and end with "forgot how good this car was" or "I really need to get one of these" :driving:

Oh absolutely! I love the S54 and the beautiful sound those throttle bodies make at 8k. Roof down, it's still mesmerising after all these years.

I also have a 70s Kawasaki triple 750cc two stroke in the garage. The other car has an M156 V8.

I can't think of anything modern to replace any of them!
