Why is your current car NOT your favorite car ?

The "best ever owned car" thread lead me to think about this.
Most people here have a Z4, but for some of them (shame...), their Z4 is not their "best ever owned car". In the "BEOC" thread, we can read "god i miss this car".
So the question is : why did you sell this "best" car if it was that good and why do you stick with the Z4 if it's not the "best car you've ever owned" ?
I mean, i know people can sell cars for obvious reasons : a two-seater is no good for family life, a sudden change of income can lead to sacrifices and so on, but if your current car is a Z4 (a rather expensive not-family car) but not your favourite one, why not sell it and get that favourite car back ?
I mean, for a single Z4, you can buy half a dozen Civic type R EP3 (just an example...).

Depends on the definition of "best" really. My previous X5 cost me £1500 to run over 7 years, so that means in terms of costs and reliability, it was great.

It is easier to define "worst" car though as those are the money pits (like the only British made car I ever bought ...).

All my German make cars have been very, very good.

so in the BEOC thread i said my 997 C2S was the best car i've owned so far.

I sold it because back problems were making it difficult to drive a manual. i don't like the auto box in the 997 unless you have the torque of a turbo behind it.

so i'm sticking with the E89 Z4 (35i with DCT) until i can afford either a gen 1 997 turbo (auto) or a gen 2 997 C2S (PDK).

While my e89 hasn't really cost me much other than depreciation, it has taken years off my life tackling build quality issues. I have a real love hate relationship (mostly love now its all sorted) with it.

It's great to have what I consider a special car, but at stressful times in my life (such as now with the recent death of a friend) I'd be happy to have a dented box on wheels I don't care about that doesn't make me worry 'what next'.

I said that mine was an S8 I owned a couple of years ago. The 5er I have now is great: a smooth engine, and I just love the look of it. My zed is great fun to drive and an immeasurable improvement on the classics I used to run as "weekend toys". But both cars have had niggles. Several cracked wheels on the 545, together with a squeak that I can't trace and odd sounds that come through the a/c system at cruising speed. The zed broke down on me the first day I had it. Plus, I had the metallic 'clunk' from the rear. Nothing serious in either case, but niggles all the same.

The S8, on the other hand, felt like it was hewn from a solid chunk of rock. And it was utterly, utterly reliable. Only ever had to change tyres and have it routinely serviced in 50k miles... and boy, for a big car, it couldn't half shift.

Quite simply for me, expectations. When spending around £20k on a sports car you expect it to be great, however when I spent a grand on an old Ford Puma for Mrs Eds the last thing I expected was to be grinning from ear to ear every time I then drove it! There's no doubt the Z4 is a 'better' car in every measurable way, but again I expect it to be!

i love my Zed but can't kid myself that my previous 645ci wasn't all round better apart from being so big i couldn't get it in my garage :o
luckily my motors are weekenders so a treat & hobby so as such i do not mind spending to maintain or improve their condition .
the 6 however was a risk on my part as the first models from 2004/2007 tried new electronics & extras (adaptive steering, lights & suspension / voice recognition interface etc ) & therefore carried many chances of breakdown & fault . . . chances which after 7 months id had enough of taking so £1800 lighter but enjoyed every minute & mile i decided to part company with the "best car ive ever owned" & go for the car i went for initially before the 6 caught my eye
in truth its not a fair comparison as the 645 was £64k in 2004 .
i do intend to have another but not until i fall out with the zed :) which won't be anytime soon

The car that I singled out as my favourite was a 1.9 205 GTi. It wasn't very reliable, would be considered poverty spec, and wouldn't be considered a fast car by todays standards and certainly compared to the Z. However, the reason it was the best car I ever owned is because what it signified to me at that point in my life. I was 18 (maybe 19), it was an expensive car for someone of my age, it was the first car that was mine and it was the first thing I drove that felt quick. I have great memories of road trips with friends in particular a trip from Glasgow to Lands end and back one summer. I also have memories of driving heroics that looking back were just stupid but in some cases have become legend amongst friends.

When I decided to buy a weekend toy car I thought about getting a 205 but I know I would ruin the memory as it probably isn't as good as I remember. It's also very difficult to find a good one.

I also noted an EP3 type R as one of my favourites. I don't know why, it was just such a surprising little package and supplied fun on tap.

I like my Z and it will rate high on my "best owned" list, it puts a big grin on my face when I push it but it's just maybe a bit less juvenile than what I normally like.

That's a very good way to put it.

My favourite car was a big, comfortable, fast black sedan, and I loved it because it was the first properly "special" car that I bought, that was more than similar a sedate family car or hatchback. Not to mention I never modified a thing on it, since I loved it exactly as it was. It was my fourth car, and I still miss it at times.

As for the Z4, exactly what cj said, it's a BMW convertible sports car, I expect it to be pretty damn good, and in many ways it is. It's far from perfect (crap ride, tinny doors, rattles), but that said picking it up from valet parking next to some very pricey cars (E63s, Astons, M cars) without it looking out of place, throwing the roof down and cruising home from a long work trip always brings a smile :)

Mitsubishi Pajero (Shogun) diesel from new as our tow car. Towed a large caravan around Australia for 10 months in 2006, carrying all of the family and all our gear safely and in comfort. Utterly reliable and gave excellent economy considering we were pulling so much weight (2500kg!)

The one car that when I think of it I have so many great memories come to mind. Good times! :-)

I think my Zed is a close second to my favorite auto. But! With the Zed it comes down to "expectations" as another poster put it. I think that given the looks and handling of this car. The acceleration performance does not match the looks. I do believe that with the intended use of this car. BMW would have been better served had they changed the gearing for better off the line acceleration. They limit their cars to 155MPH which few will really ever do. Put in shorter gearing and let the rev limiter be the top speed limiter. I have grown some what weary of having to do max effort launches to not be out paced from a stop by a golf GTI hatch back. And then the same GTI will run up to within 2MPH of the zeds top speed. Or if the GTI is a type "R" it will almost match the Zed 3.0si 0-60 and equals the Zeds top speed. In 2006 my Zed was $50,000. A 2011 GTI "R" $32,000

I know it sounds like I don't like the Zed. Not true. I bought it for a great price. love the looks and the handling. Haven't had to pour money into it. I just think that given the high end nature of the Zed. One would think that it should take a lot more car than a VW hatch back to make you work hard on a back road. Or from a stop sign.

MY favorite car was also the hardest to live with.

No heater. leaked when it rained. The engine was to powerful (It was a type one VW 2.4 litre 170HP/173 Torques) it was over stressed, ran hot, Leaked oil due to the heat and needed constant tweaking. I.E. It just wouldn't hold the carbs in sync for very long. But boy oh boy was it a lot of fun. And one didn't see the same car around the next corner when driving about.

It's funny, considering the Z has the power plant from a car I lusted after. It isn't the best car I've ever owned and I'll admit to sharing a similar sentiment to previous posts.

It's a completely irrational, emotional thing but for me it was my Corrado VR6. From 95 - 07 it was my primary transport and also my 1st "grown up" car, It was the knowing nods you got from people who knew what it was and the confused looks from those who didn't. It was pretty rare near the end of it's life and I rarely saw another, it was weird getting people look at in the car park and wanting to make you an offer (it was in fabulous nick) as you were coming back from shopping.

It was also an impressive load lugger, so saw lots of duties for mountain bike trips and some fab memories :driving: .

The Zed is awesome but it isn't a "cult car" if we're honest and the Corrado in my mind, safely had Cult car all over it but aged well.

Love the Zed though :)

if you want a "cult" Zeddy then over over to the coupe side of the bed :D

My 997TT Cab was the best car I've owned, more than twice the power of the Z etc....

Why did I sell it ? I'd had it over 3 years (an amazing feat for me and cars so it must have been good) plus it was a huge amount of money to have sat tied up in a car that was depreciating and it wasn't my only car it wasn't racking up huge miles either.

Plus I'm looking to buy a new house and the money released from it (the Z only cost 10% of what I got for the 997) will help pay for fees and improvements on the new place so it made sense.

I still wanted some roof down fun and the Z4 made the most sense at the price I was prepared to pay.........and given how it's becoming more difficult to use the power in the UK, it's a good compromise and I don't care anywhere near as much where I leave etc.......and despite it costing 90% less it's not 90% less fun so a win all round I guess :)

I sold my Scirocco as it was approaching the 20 year mark, would have needed some work in the next few years and because the ride was so awful. Also only by selling it was I able to make room for the z4. All that side, the Scirocco is still my all time fav car, although that will change once I've had the zed long enough.

Gearbox broke
300bhp.......slow
Gearbox broke again
800 quid alfa is better
Farting noise the sbc makes is embarrassing
Thought a merc would make me look stately......makes me look a twat
Especially when being lifted onto the back of a low loader.
Cost 5700 to buy........cost 1500 to actually make move.
Gearbox broke again

Jaguar launch the F type at the September show season.
Makes me lust for it and it's now my favourite car over the Z4.
Just need to wait 3-5 years until I can afford one.
