Why is the Z the only M-car without wing vents/gills!?

BMW couldn't be bothered. The car was kitted out with an expensive drive train and brakes as standard. Add to that upgraded leather and quite a lot of standard kit and I suspect they were building them at a loss (even at £43k basic :o ) If they'd have fitted new wings, skirts, spoilers, badges etc it would have taken the price/loss even higher.

Be thankful that the car itself is the proper 'M' real deal and they only skimped on the cosmetics.

Aren't the gills on the E90 M3 there just for cosmetic purposes?

Yep, just like half the bonnet ones (one of them).

I wasn't ever so keen on the E90 M3's styling. It was clearly cheap and not really in keeping with the M Bangle style set out with the Z4 M's...

Ie, the bonnet bulge is lifted from the E46 M3, but softened, when the general lines of these new cars is flamed, like the Z4M bonnet. I think it would have looked harder with sharp creases opposing the bonnet bulge.
The side vents end perfectly in time for the door. Nice detail if it'd have been done well and blended into a new door skin, but it was done cheaply and ended abrubtly looking a little odd (imho). An E46/E60 M5 esque side vent would have worked better not having the panel groove, or just dropping it entirely (Z4 M) where it just wasn't needed.

I agree with others really that the Z4 M benefits as the only Bangle car that really benefitted from Bangle M'ing where the M additions work WITH the Bangle flames, not against it! It's also a proper M car too. A bit hardcore and compromised!
