Why doesn't she understand me? Why?

I don't know about all this. Of course to each his own etc, but personally I've never cared too much about the odd dent or scratch. It's a car and its meant to be used. Too much TLC is just vanity in my opinion and I certainly would'nt let it compromise a holiday...

Saying that I think we all try to park ours well and out of site but as far as not driving into a town centre in a foreign country, its a little OTT :o

its not like driving in Cairo or anything now is it :headbang:

having just come back from a trip where we spent a day on a coach around Cairo I can relate to that - how the bus driver didnt hit anything or get hit, I will never know. Christ those drivers are loonies, pedestians are even worse.

but I would be the same as the OP, and as others have said, a car it worth more to some than others. Hassle and expense of damage, if it can be avoided should be.

I think driving in general in France and italy has improved considerably over the years. Once upon a time the French would only overtake if they were within 50 yards of a blind bend.
Haven't found the Italians too bad and bearing in mind some of the driving i see in this country it's a relief to get on the continent quite often. Just avoid Belgians, sorry to any forum members but your countrymen are generally the craziest and most inconsiderate road users i come across. If i see a belgian plate i normally keep well away and just keep shaking my head in amazement at their antics till they disappear.

Totally in agreement!!! Portugese lorry drivers and belgian car drivers are just a huge PITA on french motorways.

wouldn't it be easier to just get a rental then? doesn't sound like you'll be doing any 'fun' driving anyway. at least then you can drive with peace of mind, and won't have to avoid certain areas of your vacation such as florence.

Dont get me wrong ZED_NOT_ZEE, we are visiting everywhere we want to go and we've found a place in Florence that on paper seems fine. 20-25min walk to centre and free parking! Thats what I call a proper sesame street style compromise (Big Bird would be proud)

Hoping to have lots of fun driving out of the cities and maybe even get a tan on my pasty white face :D

So travellers, you heard about New Zealand rule where if you're driving along a road, car coming towards you & they need to turn infront of you, guess what... they have priority & you have to stop & let them through.

http://www.aa.co.nz/aadirections/driver/Pages/The-Right-Hand-Rule.aspx

I feel the lesson here, after driving in more places than I care to mention, is to be positive & courteous, so I work on the basis of if the cars got the grunt, confidently slide where there's a gap without hesitation & say thanks... but NEVER try making one.

Happy days fella
