Why do so many criticise the E89?

Kryton - I know Nickm in person and I think you've gone off course on this thread and some of the comments seem somewhat uncalled for.

I did notice the wall and gateposts did look similar TBH in both photos, unless its a neigbour that had/has both :D

Lets get this post back on course (afraid to mention i am a Welsh as HOW ON EARTH could anyone from that country Wales afford anything better than a battered Vauxhall Corsa ).

If I recall, the E85 didnt get a very good reception when it was first released. With both incarnations, I think that the styling/angles are pretty much a Marmite thing and I think the divide between those that like and those that loath are pretty much 50/50.

TBH, I thought the E89 was a bit fugly when released but has grown on me a little bit more everytime I see one

Here's some fuel for the fire then guys and forgive me as this is just my opinion but back in the day when the Z3 came out i had no interest in BMW whatsoever, especially because of that car, sorry. The Z4 came along and I thought great improvement on the Z3, better looking, more of a ballsy look, a car that might make you feel frightened when it appeared in your rear view mirror - but i still didn't want one.
When i was looking to change my 3 series convertible and i was wandering around the BMW showroom wandering what i was going to do as i didn't really like the new tin top 3 series convertible, i stumbled across a Z4 tucked in the corner and thought F@@@ me, that's gorgeous. And here i am at last :-)
I'd love to have a healey 3000, an MGA, an old jag XK, 1950's corvette, none of them make for a daily runabout, especially when i knock up between 22-25k a year in mileage. I don't have a garage nor the money for a classic and the E89 gave me the lines that i wanted. In my defence, since having the Z4 i have come to appreciate the previous model much more and i do still have a fondness for a ragtop, that i miss, but i can't have everything :-) As for you coupe owners - if i was prime minister every car would be a convertible :) no offence meant.

I like my e89... and really don'tgive a rats a** what non owners think, and my Z8 is pretty cool too, even with the custard tins looming over it :D :D

Nickm, we've had people on here faking it a bit in the past. I don't care if a guy wants to dream a bit and play the role. I'm sure we'll survive...

By the way, 42 is young enough to still be driving a go-kart  , try getting in and out when you're 55 and there's a monster old piece of scrap parked a foot away :headbang: :headbang:

last post....my Z3 was a thing of beauty ... a bare bones classic sports car. I loved it. Hated the "soft" new Z4 when it came out. Now I sort of like it, the E85/86 that is. Just goes to show that we all have different opinions ..... :driving:

Absolutely mcbee and that's what makes life so much fun. we'd be bored senseless if there was only one car out there for us all to drive - unless it was a nissan figaro (which i think is a great cult car) !

Not sure if you're taking the piss or not

But I love the figaro.....will post a pic....

Never heard of a Figaro...had to google it. Pretty bizarre styling for a 1989 issue ...very retro. :|

Def not taking the proverbial :D
I do think the figaro is a great car, an old client of mine used to import them into the country. I love the retro look and think more car manufacturers should be brave enough to go a little retro, i always smile when i see a figaro and think - there's someone with a sense of fun - good on 'em.

Have done a pretty extensive restoration on it, new seats, carpets, all interior trim resprayed, all panels sprayed, new CD with aux connection etc....

I must say you very rarely see a bloke driving one, so you can look a bit....anyway, love it....

But still this is one of my all time favourite cars - it's been more reliable than any other car I've owned - anything from Audi, Merc, BMW and yes even Bentley! (dare I mention than name ever again!)

I had a 645 Convertible at launch which went to the garage 30 + times in 18 months, which got replaced with a healthy discount, and that I would say is my most anticipated excited purchase, but the RRS, is just beautiful to drive....especially after the Z!

Both look great. Impressed to hear the range rover has been so reliable. One of my colleagues has had 2 new discos - 3 and now disco 4. I constantly ribbed him about the garage seeing more of his car than he did. Unfortunately i have my tail between my legs after the z4 spent a week in bmw undergoing warranty work recently.

Hmmm, not sure on the figaro, seen quite a few but it looks a little odd, as if Noddy should be driving it... now Nickm am not implying anything here

haha, ok no offense taken.....

In terms of the E89 not being as good looking as the coupe, this is the first convertible I have had that looks better with the roof up than down, crazy but true.

The RRS just feels lovely to drive after the Z4, but it's always lovely getting back into the BMW, engine sounds great too. It's a very beautiful car

i think it may because its just not as good lookin as the coupe :)

Have to agree...

Guys, beauty is in the eye of the beholder ! Plus, why buy a roadster that the roof doesn't come off?! Excuse while i run and hide in a dark corner :)
As i've said elsewhere I think the E89 is fab, best with roof down and when i get the R+D funds together i will be looking for some boffins to develop an infrared wave that forcibly opens all electric convertible roofs in the country and looks them down permanently

Nice RRS NickM ..... TDV8 by any chance ? ... I love the contrast between Disco and Z4...........

Do you not find the rear a bit cramped in the RRS ? .. we´ve looked at them as its prettier than the disco but found it a bit cramped.

It is but i don't have any children so it suits me just fine. It's a TDV6 though, but holds it's value very well these days.

It's a great car, and still great looking too....

I agree, the roof up makes it look more cockpit like, and people don't know what it is...I see cars go by with the drivers giving me the "WTF is it...should I race it or not?" look.... They never do... :D

and it still looks great with the top down
