Why do people mask/ blurr or cover their number plates in pictures

It's a thing that's always confuses me, why ?

On forums in threads , even on autotrader and eBay sellers hide their plates when trying to sell a vehicle , the person drives their car on the road everyday with other car users and passers by looking at the reg , but up it in a pic it has to be blurred or covered

I don't get it

Please enlighten me

To make it more difficult for criminals using the number plate to clone a vehicle of the same model/colour. If you think about it, AutoTrader offers an easy way to find an identical vehicle for this purpose.
 
i often wonder myself

i suppose people are feard of being cloned but it could happen anyway
 
Better safe than sorry I reckon.

I'm always surprised at the number of folk who post links from Autotrader with their home postcode in the link still -- great way to locate a shiny Z4 in the area :) :)
 
I get its for cloning purposes, but if bet if I went to my local tesco Now I could find a grey 5 door 3 series in the car park or a white Nissan Juke to clone .

If I wanted to clone a prestige car say a black Austin Martin db7 I just google image for the car or find one for sale on the Internet

I personally don't get it especially as it takes time no effort to edit the image

i do agree with not having postcodes on autotrader , gumtree even pinpoints the location if you don't turn it off
 
Even on Autotrader or anywhere else you sell a car someone can phone you and ask for your address to view the car.
So hiding your reg or postcode sometimes seems pointless.
I dont know if this is common knowledge or not but with some pics if you click on details it will give you details of where the pic was taken.
 
I think the people doing the cloning are a tad more sophisticated than checking an online forum or auto trader for a plate.

Can't see the point myself.
 
I'm sure 95% do it because they think it protects them from cloning (mistakenly).

I think the remaining 5% do it because the car has a hidden past. They want the potential customer to ring up so they can try to convince them that "it's a great motor, properly repaired - you'd never know it was a Cat C mate" :lol:
 
Some people do it because they have inadequate insurance that doesn't cover their mods!

Funny, people will blur out number plates but not street signs or street names on pictures especially on pictures of cars parked up. Even on pictures of cars that do not belong to them.

I find that mad! I'll block the number plate but let the world know where you live :thumbsdown:
 
It's called irrational paranoia, our reaction to a perceived threat through hear say and not through any scientific data.....

.....I know of one person on here that has had their car registration plate cloned, possibly two, but certainly not of pandemic proportions. Sometimes irrational paranoia is a good thing, like not walking down an empty street in the middle of the night on your own, the chances of something bad happening are low but the stakes high. Only you can decide the value you put on your plate and the consequences of cloning thereof and for me life's to short as it is without wasting time editing photos
 
I think its becoming more and more pointless as time goes on.
There really is no point hiding the plate on trader unless your up to no good. At the end of the day your selling the car so if someone does clone the plate the likelihood is it will be the next owners problem not yours before any issues arise.
Trader these days automatically flags cars that are CAT C & D so the only possible reason I can see for hiding a plate is so you can use the reg number of a different car so not to flag up the car your selling.
Anyone with any brains is still going to do there own HPI Check before buying but then again there are plenty that don't!
 
If somebody is looking for a specific car to clone they may not see it in the local tesco. So they will go to websites to get the info, if you have hidden your number plate they will move onto the next one. Personally I can't imagine that a criminal wanting a Black Z4 to clone will drive around trying to find one. So I think there is some benefit in masking the number plate.
 
:lol: :thumbsup: Can still tell it's a Z4 roadster with a whippy that lives near an air field I reckon a few months more research and I'll have it nailed. :wink:
